Rust on a Sebenza, say it ain't so.

So I recently "lost" my Sebenza and just today my dad sent me a picture of it laying amongst the melting snow on his back patio. I went and picked it up and brought it home, apologized to the blade for being such a bad user, and proceeded to disassemble it for a good cleaning.

The blade came out clean as a whistle with just a little hot water and my thumb. The inside of the handle however, wasn't so fortunate. As you can see in the picture the week long exposure to snow caused a bit of rust on the blade to transfer to the handle. I rubbed it down with some dish soap and hot water and that is as far as I have gotten. So my question is, how do I get the rust off without jeopardizing the integrity of the piece of art we call a Cris Reeve Knife?

Try to loosen the discoloration with oil. When I clean a Sebenza, I totally disassemble it and then rub every part down with Tuff-Cloth. This cleans any grease or crud even off the titanium, and keeps any from sticking for a long time.

I would try oil and gentle rubbing with scotchbrite.

I hate to ask but..... did you take any pictures of the blade? :o

I didn't but I will. The polishing on the S30V held up very very well, it's still perfect.

That rust coloration on the inside of the titanium handle is just color: That is not rust that formed on the titanium. Titanium can not rust.

So, take a deep breath and don't worry about your handles. There is positively no damage to your knife.

:D

Here's the blade. I was having troubles getting the edges lit and I'm too lazy to set up the tripod. It's clean as day though.

I know the Ti wont rust, it's a rust stain left by the blade rusting.

IMHO Barry H is right, it's not rust, not on Ti. BTW the blade isn't in contact with the inside of the scale. It must be something like dry oil or Lock-Tite.

That's hilarious that your dad sent you a picture of your Sebenza laying in the snow! You must have been glad to see it.

+1 .. Yeah that's the "money shot"! Let's see the pic of it in the snow. :)

Glad it was found no worse for the wear too.....
:)

That's got to be one of the best feelings in the world. Thinking you lost your Sebenza for a good week. Then getting a call from your dad saying that he found it in the back yard. I know if that was me I'd be over joyed to have it back!.

Was it clipped in your pocket? I've lost 2 knives over the years carrying with the clip; fortunately not a Sebenza. Somehow they work out of my pocket, maybe when I bend while working. I now take the clips off and add a lanyard. I put the knife in my pocket and let the parcord lanyard hang out of my pocket for quick access.

It hurts to lose any knife but it's pretty common. I once read an article about David Crosby the rock star who is an avid knife collector. One thing he mentioned about knives in that piece was "if you can't afford to lose a particular knife, don't carry it".

Glad you got it back, now it's lucky!

Just about anything you do other than scrubbing with a toothbrush and a non-abrasive solution (Dawn...alcohol or lighter fluid...) is going to affect the finish of the Ti, even if only slightly. It's cosmetic. I'd leave it alone.

could be from machining? do they use carbide or HSS endmills for the machine work...on my spyderco balisong one part of the handle that is routed out with an endmill always rusts even though its non-ferrous.
