Rust on hone?

A while back, I had asked a question about coarse hones and now I have another question.

I purchased a 1x6 extra coarse EZE-Lap diamond hone. I have been using it wet and I usually run it under the sink after I'm done using it, simply letting it air dry. It appears to have developed spots of rust on it after doing a little bit of sharpening on my BK9. I'm assuming it's the carbon steel off the BK9 that has rusted, but is there a good way to clean it off, or even any reason to?
If it's going to slow down or degrade the sharpening process, I'd like to clean it. If not, then I've got a diseased looking stone that will stay that way.

Always dry it wila non linting clothe. Rust will and up gunking up the works and making it look ugly, you migh tneed a tough brush to scrub it off.

I had the same problem using water on my DMT stones.

The rust is no longer a problem since I changed to Mineral Oil (baby oil in the supermarket). Wipe it off with a paper towel and ready to go next time you need the hone.

FK

The diamond hones are made of carbon steel, with the diamonds nickel plated onto the surface. Water can get into wear spots, causing rust to undermine the nickel. WD 40 will displace any water on the hones.

I thought those hones were stainless.

Thanks for the tips gentlemen. I did manage to get some off with a toothbrush and I'll just be sure to keep it dry.

Per the manufacturers instructions, I use water on my DMT stones, and never had a bit of problem with rust.

The rust is probably blade steel, but a squirt of WD 40 when you are through can't hurt.
