Has anyone had the issue of rust forming in their talon hole and any ideas on a easy way to get in there and remove.

Yep, just use a Q-tip with a dab of oil (I use Tetra) to swab it out. When not in use keep a thin layer of your favorite oil on the blade.

Hmmm... looks well rusty!

First thought is to cut a slice of scotchbrite pad, roll it, stuff it through the hole and scrub away.

I have had rust in talon holes, they don't get as finished as the rest of the blade.
If you have a dremel it will be easy to touch up:thumbup:

Does the Tetra harm the various coatings on other blades? I would like to keep the edges rust free but don't want to risk harming the coatings.

If it does are there any other oils that won't.

Thanks for the info.

I use tuf-cloth (marine tuf-cloth if you go near salt water).

It's never harmed anything I've used it on (that is, all my knives) and it does a good job of preventing rust. You must clean the rust off first though.

You can also try using a piece of cord, or perhaps nylon shoe lace. If you have buffing compound, like what you use on a strop. Take the lace, load it with some compound and thread it through the hole, then pull it back and forth a bunch till the hole is nice an polished. My guess is that if you do a polish job on the talon hole, it will not rust as easily. Once the rust scale is removed, and polished it will be easier to just put a dab of oil in the hole with a Q-tip or something.

You could put the knife in a padded vice to make it go faster, or stab it hard into a block of wood (like a stump or something) so you can really work the cord back and forth to get a good polish and remove the rust scale.

I guess I am lucky, I have not had one of my pieces of infi rust anywhere yet, and I don't ever oil them. Then again, I am not near any salty bodies of water. I have had this issue on other knives that have holes in them, though.

I'm a salty body myself and I've had rust on my ASH-1 LE and a little on my satin AD. O1 rusts like mad after I've touched it and brass will show my fingerprints preserved in tarnish within minutes (literally!)

Proper cleaning after use and Tuf-cloth stops it.

Just polish it once every six months with a q-tip and metal polish like Eagle One Nano Polish. Or, dab in some grey rust paint.
