Rust on my MOD Trident?

I have found a few spots of rust on the blade of my MOD trident plain edge satin knife. What is the best way to remove the rust? I tried rubbing it down with some silicon cloth (like tuff cloth) and it didn't work...

I know what you can do to get rid of the rust... You can trade your satin finished Trident for my black bladed Trident. That will get rid of your rust problem and cure my desire to have a satin finished trident!:)

Depending on how deep the reust stains go, you may be able to rub them off with a normal pencil eraser.

Try a good metal cleaner like Flitz. It's available at most gun shops and hardware stores. It should do the trick unless your knife is deeply pitted.

Concur with flitz, go easy, rub lightly until they are gone.

Pencil eraser can work as well if not too deep.

I wouldn't use the steel wool until a last resort.

There is a product put out called Sharpmaster Multi-purpose Eraser. It looks like pumice but is soft like a pencil eraser. My distributor sells it for 4.95 retail per eraser. I have used it frequently and it does a good job of surface rust on about any metal. Doesn't take the finish of the blade but again, go easy and watch the elbow grease using only that which is required to remove the surface rust.

I'd forget flitz and fancy overpriced erasers. I believe, and I well may be wrong, that flitz can change/discolor certain finishes.

If it is just a tiny bit of surface rust, it'll wipe off with any good oil and a rag. Eezox has shown itself to be by far the finest rust preventor. The pic in This Thread convinced me.

For a few bucks I thought I'd try it and it works very well as a CLP for my guns and knives.

The thing to keep in mind of course, is that any stuff you put on a knife that is used or carried frequently will wear off. Knives that are carried/used require more attention than safe queens.

Obviously those metal plates in the pic weren't being taken in and out of pockets, etc. and as such the compounds stay on and protect. This is obviously not the case on a carried/used blade.

ReconTech,

I have had rust that could not be removed by eraeser and oil.

Try a small amount of #800 SiC grit and oil on a soft rag, rub lightly. It will take it off. With care I've not damaged the finish of several blades.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Surface rust might be able to be removed with your fingernail.
Last time, flitz and a Qtip did it for me.

I don't think 4.95 retail for the eraser is overpriced.

I've seen flitz [ used it for years ]discolor certain finishes as well, but not often enough to worry about it. Once it has been flitzed, I use alcohol or lighter fluid to clean the blade and then re-oil with clp.

The ones having issues with discoloring are probably not removing it completely from the blade after using it.

I've had only surface rust appear on some of the knives and the eraser works great at that task. I have had one for over five years and have barely used 30% of it. Thats $5.00 5 years ago with 70% of the eraser left for future use. I spend more than that on things I don't care about, let alone those things which I cherish and use daily.

Unless this eraser does something extra special that pencil erasers cannot or do not do, I think it is overpriced.

I've used a pencil eraser several times to remove minor rust and some sticky residue from blades.

Its not as if $5.00 is a lot of money by any means, but it costs a lot more than the myriad of pencils the average person probably has lying around their home.

Is there anything special about this eraser?

First, it's called an eraser, but it isn't a pencil eraser or material like a pencil eraser.

I had seen it in my distributors catalogue for years and never paid attention to it till another wanted one on the next order. Having gotten a look at it, ordered one myself later on another order.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it is special, but it is different than an ordinary pencil eraser. I have no idea what it is made of, but it is black, porous in nature, and feels like a pencil eraser to the touch. I've always assumed thats why they list it as a rust eraser [ due to it feeling like one off a pencil ].

It does work quite well on surface rust and leaves no tell tale sign of having been touched to the blade. Hard to decribe it, but it definately is not a pencil eraser material.
