Hi guys.

There was a recent thread here about rust on the Rat.

I just came from a trip to my my islands hunting Puffin and Cormorant and I used my Rat 4. There were some rust spots on the edge witch I removed with steel wool and a diamond hone, easy. But the rust in the Rat logo is making me think. I don´t wanna ruin the logo but I want the rust out.

Any suggestions

some none linting cloth and general gun oil removed rust spot from my rifle and blades in army. You just need to use quite a lot time... Salt water, that is bad for metal. It took only few hours be on Beaches of no-name backwoods on Baltic Sea and my rifle had rust spots and my blades got soon after. ( being soaked in salt water didn't helped matter ) but still, cloth and oil is good way to get small rust spots away if you act quickly. File and steelwool damage blades too much and are coarse. I'd use them only removing rust when other methods don't work.

I'd media blast it. They say crushed walnut shells are not too hard on the metal. :p

3m scrounge pad ftw... then a coat of mineral oil or CLP. I personally like silicone rags the best. but there is a very comprehensive thread on 1095 maintenance stickied in the RAT cutlery forums.

Bar Keeper's Friend scouring powder works great. I have read about people saying it's not necessarily the best to use on a knife - I'm not sure why - but I've used it with no problems. If anyone else wants to chime in on this one that would be cool.

From the RAT Website:

We do not warranty against rust or normal wear and tear. Note: Our knives are made from high carbon 1095 steel. And while 1095 is a top choice for professional cutlery designed for hard use, it will rust and stain if not properly cared for - especially on the cutting edge and around the laser engraving. It is the user's responsibility to keep the blades properly lubricated and cleaned. We suggest using a dry film rust inhibitor such as TUF-GLIDE or TUF-CLOTH.
