Is rust on 8cr13mov blades common? I bought a tenacious as a gift a two weeks ago and have been fondeling it ever since but today i noticed ever so small, needle-prick, rust below the hole on both sides of the blade. The only reasons i can think caused it was from sweaty fingers/thumb or from finger print wiping with possibly damp clothes. I'm mostly wondering how to get it off before i give it to my friend and for future use in case this happens to my brand new endura zdp :[

whenever i get a new blade, i put a thin coat of oil on her. also wipe down after plenty of fondling. oil, fondling, wtf? sounds like a wild night with the ol' lady!

a little oil and a rag should get that rust off.

cheers! kimo

You, my friend, are awesome.

As for the rust situation, if oil and a rag doesn't cut it, I hear people using #0000 steel wool or Flitz polish.

8Cr13MoV is comparable to AUS-8 in composition, and they are both stainless steels. Maybe not as stainless as 440C or VG-10, but stainless nonetheless.

A bit of Barkeep's friend should take that right off.

ZDP has had some reported stainless issues, the main justification being all the chromium is getting tied up with carbon forming carbides and not forming the usual protective layer. I've never had a problem with it though.

Is rust on 8cr13mov blades common? I would so not. I have been using my Tenacious everyday at work for the past month. Gets put back in my pocket wet sometimes and I have no signs of rust anywhere on the blade.

My Byrd Rescue (same steel as the Tenacious) has been sitting in my wife's car for the past few months, unused (wiped down with a clean cloth and put away in the glove box). When I checked on it a few weeks ago it had light rust all over the blade.
I don't care , really, it's a $20 knife, but yeah, 8cr13mov will rust. If I wanted ultimate rust resistance I'd buy something in H1.

I've never had a 8cr13mov blade rust on me, just give it a light coating of oil and it's done. To get the rust off try WD-40 on a rag and scrub it.

Most people think "stainless" means "rustless." It does not and never has. Stainless steel is, at best, "rust-resistant," and to varying degrees at that.

I'd say you just learned a valuable lesson (and you didn't even have to lose an expensive knife to rust to learn it).
