Rust/oxidation on mini CQC-7

Hi all,

I just took delivery of a new Emerson mini CQC-7 wave BT finish. Upon removing the knife from the box and plastic pouch, I immediately noticed two things: 1) there was no dessicant in the pouch, and 2) the edge of the liner opposite the liner lock was speckled with rust/oxidation completely around the entire knife.

I own many knives and I've been buying them (and losing them) for years. I have never seen a knife come out of the box in this condition before. (I have owned and carried a full-sized Benchmade CQC-7 on duty since 1996 and I've never seen a speck of rust or oxidation on it - and believe me, it gets no special attention.)

In your experience, is this normal for today's knives? Any advice is appreciated. I sent Emerson Knives an email with this info but haven't heard back yet.

thanks,
Steve

i would try and wipe the rust off, if its really bad send it into EKI, & no its not a normal thing to send out rusty knives lol.

Did you buy this knife from a retailer or Emerson directly ?.

Sounds unusual as the liners are Ti !.

I've seen some pretty serious rusting between stainless liners and G-10 on an old benchmade of mine that was left in a toolbox in my truck for 2 years. There was probably a little on the edges of the liner as well, but not serious. I've never seen it on a new knife though.

send it back. the thing probably sat on the shelves a little too long...may have been in a humid area or some condensation or moisture got to it.

Thats what i thought :)

Emerson is going to change over to another liner steel soon, Ti too $$$$$.

Someone in another thread mentioned that they recently returned an Emerson for service and a faulty Ti liner was replaced with a steel one...

I bought the knife from an online retailer... CrocBlades in Louisiana. The EKI folks responded to my email and said it's probably rust, clean it with WD-40 and if it doesn't come clean, send it to them. They also said the liners are Ti so I don't understand either. I applied CLR with a Q-tip and it came off.

The only reason I made a fuss was because I'd bragged to a friend at work about the quality of EKI and I decided to buy him this for his birthday. I can't see giving this as a gift now.

You bought that for a friend....................., i'll be your friend if you like though my birthday was in July, better late than never :).

Nothing wrong with it mate (the knife), will provide years of service and the Ti liners will be no more soon.

I sent another email to EKI and told them that I thought one side of the liner (the side with the rust)appeared brighter than the other and asked if it might be steel instead of Ti. Here's the response from EKI:

We did use some liners made of stainless steel recently. I would have to see the knife to know for sure. You can send the knife in to be looked at by our repair person if you would like. Maybe she can change it.

Soooo, it looks like some of you are correct about them changing to steel. Thanks for the responses.
