Rust prevention beneath a wrapped handle.

Rookie here with a rookie question. I have a 12 inch Damascus tracker style knife blank. It's unconventional, but I'll be using cord wraps that get removed somewhat frequently for demonstrations. The question is, is there a rust preventative coating or paint that anyone could recommend for the handle? It should be permanent, clear would be a bonus.

I have no problem oiling and maintaining the blade, but handle wraps and grease or oil are a bad combo.

Ospho, a marine product that contains a mild concentration of phosphoric acid. I spray it from a squirt bottle and let it dry.

Practice it first on scrap steel, it can discolor.

While paint doesn't wear well, it protects until it wears through or chips. If the paint is protected by a cord wrap, or wood or Micarta, I would think it would work well.
BUT- you can't epoxy handles on top of paint, because all that would be holding the handles on would be the adhesion of the paint. If you use mechanical fasteners it should work well.
