My daughter is doing a science project on comparing various rust preventatives. I have not found as much specific information on BladeForums as I thought I would.

Does anyone have any suggestions or good sources on the topic?

Thank you for your attention. I would have possibly tried to phrase my topic a little better, but those deadlines seem to creep up even faster than rust on tool steel.

do a search in the "Knife Reviews and Testing" section. Cliff Stamp has done some detailed reviews of rust preventing agents.

There's a little link below the "post reply" button called "search". This feature can search every post ever made here on bladeforums.com. Kind of scarry, huh? Anyway, several members, chief among them Mr. Stamp, have done semi-scientific tests. As I recall, WD-40 came out the best in one test.

The most important lesson learned is to clean the metal really, really well before you apply the various potions and lotions.

Otherwise, let us know how the tests come out. I'm sure we'll all be interested.

Some of the various rust preventatives have been criticized for not being very durable. I'd suggest doing one test in which the metal is simply placed in a high-humidity envirnment but not one in which there is condensation or any physical contact with the metal. Another should be exposed to rain or light water mist which would condense on the metal and possibly "wash" away the protective. A final should be rubbed, perhaps one stroke per day, with a sponge. This will test the durability of the protection.
