Has anyone used "sheath rust preventor" made by birchwood casey? I am looking for a rust preventitive to use on my knives and particularly my new leatherman as I do a fair amount of salt water fishing. I need something that will get in to the crevices and in between the tools in my leatherman so many of the rub on compounds are hard to use. Any other thoughts or advice on rust inhibitors would be appreciated.

That sheath stuff works great for long-term rust-prevention and it's easy to use.

A word of warning...

I usually ignore those "Use in well-ventilated area." warnings on containers and never really had a problem UNTIL I used Sheath in a basement workshop and it made me REALLY sick to my stomach and woosey. Even a little will send you spinning. Whew.

Personally, I really like Breakfree CLP. The spray can works good, but it isn't really a "spray"; squirts out like a water fountain. Spray it on and wipe the excess off. It's stinky too, but not nearly as harmful as Sheath.

thanks for the advice but this is for steel not leather. The product that I found at a local gunshop is called "sheath rust preventor" it is for steel.

It's all the same stuff, just different delivery.

I've been using the can that works like a spraypaint can, but I don't recommend it because it comes out in a stream.

Next time I'm getting the pump spray bottle. Maybe you should try that instead.

I wish I could get a really fine mist.

The Sheath I use in the Spray can and it works great.

The Breakfree CLP I recommend in the spray bottle - it's also a great lube so it'll do double-duty.

Sheath works great, I think they have changed the name to "Barricade" same thing, different name.... :D

Look in your local boat yard and see if they have CorrosionX. It is so good at displacing corrosives and water that it will even do it in your cell phone should you drop it overboard. If you can't find it localy let me know. I'll send you a little sample tube. I confess to being a dealer for it. Sorry.

If you're going to use your knife on food, ie. cheese, susage etc. think about what you put on your knives. Sheath is rough stuff.

Best bet is keep them clean with Purell anti-bacterial hand cleaner. Don't coat them with anything, unless you're storing them. For EDC, make a habit of cleaning your knife and touching up your knife on a strop at the end of the day.

Even cooking sprays are bad. They become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Storing your knifes. Use CLP or any good gun oil. Just clean them well before you go to carry them. Cleaners can be as bad chemically as protectants. I have come to rely on soap and water for initial cleaning. Then final clean with Purell.

The problem isn't storing these particular knives. I use these knives and my leatherman for marine fishing. After just a few hours of salt spray and salt sea air they will already have surface rust on them. If I don't clean them within hours of returning they will begin pitting. This is why I am looking for an extreme anti-corrosion protection. I don't use these knives for food prep just my bait knives and my leatherman.

CorrosionX is bio-degradable. Will keep salt water and spray off yer stuff for weeks at a time. Will not even leave an oil slick on the water.
