OK. I have a Benchmade CQC7. I carry it every day, and it gets quite a bit of use. Now, I live in Boston (with our salt air, rain and snow). Because of the climate, I'm getting rust on the blade. Now, I'm not a knife expert. I'm just your average Joe who likes you have a blade handy. So, two questions for the Suspects. 1., what's a good way to lose the rust, without hurting the finish of the blade (too much, or at all), and 2., how can I keep this from recurring?

Thanks, guys!

I believe yours is an ATS34 steel with a blasted finish. It is said that this type of finish can cause rust quicker than a satin/ polished finish. Any good light oil preservative will do unless you are using it for food purposes. Even soap and water on a regular basis will do fine while in between oiling. A good quality non abrasive polishing paste such as Flitz brand can work wonders. Keep in mind though that the friction and pressure applied with any polishing agent can smoothen out the blast finish. However, Flitz brand is the safest I' ve used over the years on BLUED firearms. And indeed, it does remove corrosion and surface rust WITHOUT any harm to its bluing!
Good luck.

Some of the BM CQC7s were Bead Blasted. Bead Blasting causes microscopin creaters in the suface of the blade. This is not an issue with Ti, but is with steel blades.

Moisture get's into those creators and stays. If the blade is not oiled (or other protectant), rust will occure. It's only surface rust, but it is irratating.

Some dealers list the current EKI "Satin" finish as "Bead Blasted", it's not. Does this mean you should feel secure in neglecting your tools? No.

"How to remove it". Good question. Anyone know if you could use a rust remover on the blade, like those sold in the sporting goods section of stores like Walmart? I think it's "Benchwood" brand or something like that? Will that harm the blade?

John -

Mine is, in fact, bead blasted. Good to know it's only surface rust (damn salt water). I took the knife apart, to get a good look at the blade, and the good news is there's no pitting. Also, the rust isn't as extesive as I first feared. I took the advice of Trader1 and got some Tuf-cloth from 1sks (and some white lightning). I tried going to the Flitz website to get some of that, but for whatever reason the site wouldn't link me to the "checkout" page. Ahh well. I'll check hardware stores (it IS "as seen on TV". )

John - I'll have to look at that rust remover you mentioned. I dunno if it'll harm the blade. It is good to know that the bead blasting isn't an applied finish, like the black teflon, so whatever I use won't "remove" it, per se. The thing I am worried about are tha applied graphics on the blade "Benchmade" on the front, and Ernie's logo on the back (the more important one)

. I'll keep you guys updated. Thanks for all the help!!
