Hey all,
Might be a stupid question but I’m a knife noob. I just bought an esee 4 my question is do I have to oil it straight out of the box? I haven’t used it yet and don’t have any plans on using it any time soon. Should I oil it before storing it?

As a rule I always put a light coat of oil to protect the knife straight out of the box.

Only other thing would be to keep out of a leather holster if you are keeping it stored.

I love my ESEE-4, it is a great knife. 1095 is an incredible steel. It holds and edge amazingly well. Your ESEE-4 is coated. The only part that you need to worry about rusting is the edge and the logo. I just keep a coat of oil that I use for my guns on it and it holds up great.

What I like to do is to apply a coat of machine oil, leave it for 15 min, then wipe it dry. In my experience, as long as you keep your carbon blades clean, you shouldn’t have problems with rust. Never ever leave the knife wet.

If rust does occur, baking soda mixed with water does wonders. Rub the paste with a toothbrush then wipe it dry.

I just use the mineral oil from the laxative isle in case I need to use the knife for cooking. Since I go camping with scouts you never know what has been forgotten or lost
