I feel crass asking this in light of what just happened to a fellow member--me and my families heart goes out to him. My stupid little question is this: can anyone recommend a way to remove those tiny little pin-point rust spots that tend to form on steels like 1084? I purchased a nice Jim Crowell hunter that came with these barely discernable spots and I'd like to remove them but am afraid to do something that would mark-up the blade. ANY hints or tips would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks much--Jim Falor SEMPER FI

I use a product called Flitz. It removes rust very well and I'm pretty sure it won't mark up the blade.

On the packaging it says:
Metal polish,fiberglass & Paint restorer
Non-abrasive, non-toxic, acid-free, no residue

Works wonders on allmost all metals. I use it on all my knives and other steel things around the car and house.

Thanks two you both for the help. I've even got a tube of Flitz here--I just didn't know it was good at taking off those little tiny rust specks! Thanks again and Happy Holidays to both of you and your families. Jim USMC

Flitz it is.

Flitz is non-abrasive. Rub it just enough to rub it into the texture of the metal surface. On a polished smooth surface, this may be just a few quick rubs. It's a chemical polish, so let it set for a few minutes to have its chemical reaction. They just buff it off.

James - On the carbon steels with a hand rubbed finish you need to be careful - even flitz can put a "polish" in the area surrounding the speck which is noticable against the rest of the finish. I speak from experience :grumpy:

I am still looking for a perfect way to do this - at the moment I am taking a tooth pick to the spot and gently dabbing directly at the area and no further, then giving it a good polish with ren wax - but this only reduces the cosmetic appearance, I have no idea if it is neutralising or stopping the erosion. Other people have suggested rubbing the spot with a soft pencil, but I have not tried that.
