I left my khukuri at my mom's house, on my bed, and under a few blankets about a week ago. No liquid was spilled on my bed or anything, so it was dry. I cleaned off the blade before I went to my dad's house. I just got back today, and as I threw the blankets off of my bed, there it was..... a tennis ball- sized patch of rust staring me in the face! I bolted to my drawer and got out the steel wool and green brillo pad, and I went at it, scrubbing like I was trying to start a fire. I got all of the rust off, all that is left of it is some minor discoloration (the steel is a lighter color) and some scratching where the rust was. So, what can I do to stop this from happening again? I don't have any oil, but I'll get some here in a week or so. Should I store my khuk in an open air environment, not covered with anything? (like blankets) Should I store it in its sheath? Thanks everyone.

Putting the blankets over the blade helped to trap moisture on the carbon steel. I'd oil it up and avoid covering the blade with any sort of material that can wick moisture from the air. I saw a stainless steel Kimber 45 auto pistol, form rust on the slide while wrapped in a silicone cloth once. The rust formed on the bottom where it lay against the gun safe. I think you are better off to avoid putting metal in cloth of any sort for storage.

Oil it up and keep it in it's sheath, that is if it a Nepalese style sheath with wood core and leather cover. Or you can coat it with car wax if you keep it out and don't want to collect dust in the oil.
You can get mineral oil at any store or drugstore. Mineral oil is a great way to go as it is food safe.
I use a combination of mineral/clove oil on all of my Khukuris and other carbon stel knives.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

I put loads of motor oil on my carbon steel Kabar and leather sheath. It's stored on my jeep's rollbar so it's exposed to pretty damp environments but no rust so far.

Quit leaving little patches of giggity-giggity on your mattress and you won't have that problem with your knife.

Actually, don't store a knife in your bed under the covers and it may help there too. Might want to get on some therapy for that, either way. ;)

yea what he said...:foot: So anyway then you can also go get ya some white vinigar and some 100% lemon juice mix em 50/50. Then find a container to prop the kukri up in and fill it up to just under the handle with the lemon vingar mix. Let set for 3-5 hours and remove and wipe off with paper towel...VOILA! dull grey finish and no rust spot! next raid your mom's fridge and grab the arm and hammer baking soda and dust the blade with it to nuetralize the acids. and keep it dry from then on, give it the same attention you would a blued gun by wiping it down with a silicon gun and reel cloth once a month or depending on your ambient humidity maybe every 2 weeks. you'll never have to worry about rust again! :)
