Rust Removal and Oiling

I have a "new to me" knife that is in great shape, but has a little bit of rust on it. I bought it new in box, but it's nearly 20 years old and looks like it was never oiled or cared for.

I need to do remove a little bit of rust from the blades and then oil it, but I have no idea where to start.

What are some good techniques for removing rust, and how would I go about oiling the blade?

Try some Flitz or Semichrome on it to see if it will remove the rust and polish the blade up. If the rust (red rust) is to stubborn for the Flitz, try some 000steel wool with some wd40 and lightly scrub the rust away. If the blades are carbon steel, the rust may just be a natural patina, and the flitz should remove most of it. Then oil with some light machine oil or gun lube. I use Hoppes #9 on mine when I do oil them. (seldom as I use them and keep them clean and dry after use.) Good luck!

Blessings,

Omar
