So I found the basics and have tried 2 battery chargers with similar results - no current flows because they are automatic and don't sense a battery in the loop. Without getting an old battery what can i do to fool the charger?

I have a 20V Variac as well but not finding much info on the bridge i'd need to buy or build.

You gotta use an old school charger that puts out voltage no matter what. I've found that 12v and 6a works best and erring on the side of more soda is better. Use it in a well ventilated place as the process creates hydrogen which is extremely flammable.
