Rust removal help

I have a couple folders that are hand-me-downs from my Great Grandfather and they have developed rust on the blades over the years. I dont know much about knife maintenance at all. Is there any simple way to get the rust off? and How do I keep rust from returning if I get it off? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Scrub the blades with WD 40 and 0000 steel wool. Then oil them.

Flitz polishing compound. If it's really bad, #oooo steel wool and Flitz. I should help to protect the blades as well.
