I just picked up a new knife with D2 steel, and it came with a few small rust spots on the blade. I was wondering what the best way to get rid of them is? I've tried spraying a little WD-40 on it and then scrubbing the rust spots with a rag, but the rust wouldn't go away.

I have used WD-40 and a small piece of 000 steel wool successfully to remove rust spots and some deeper rust "pits" on some blades. You can also use some 400, 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper on it also. The steel wool leaves less of a scratch pattern on the blades if that is a concern to you. Good luck.

Blessings,

Omar

Also try CLP, which is for guns. Might try letting it soak, and then try 0000 steel wool.

Polishing paste (Flitz/Simichrome) with a little 'elbow grease' will take care of red rust, quite easily. Scrubbing the paste in with a clean rag, or pencil eraser, or piece of wood can also help. The black/grey spots left, if any, won't harm the steel at all. A little more elbow grease with the polishing paste, and/or sanding with high-grit wet/dry sandpaper can also remove those, if desired. The sandpaper will obviously leave some grinding marks, or otherwise alter the finish by polishing (depending on grit used), so keep that in mind.

I've successfully used wet aluminum foil on rust spots before. Just crumple some up, wet it and rub over the rust spots.

Breakfree CLP does a very good job on rust and is generally safe for most any finish. Dab on the CLP and let it sit overnight and repeat.

Depending on how bad the rust is.....depends on what i use. None of these will get rid of really bad rust....only surface rust. Nevr dull works like magic. Ive tried it all and this stuff is impressive. Still wont tackle really bad rust easily or at all though. I also like flitz. It works really well. When the normal oil and steel wool fails...flitz seems to get it done.

Moving on to worse than light spotting of rust....I use any of the usual lubricants or oils and a bronze gun cleaning brush. Be careful of ruining a finish though. I also use one of those rust eraser products....but that will ruin a finish.....so I only use it on a working tool where scratches and such already exist.
