I mentioned the trick of removing rust by scraping with a penny recently.... Yesterday I found an old knife of mine that has a pretty good coat of surface rust. It's an old fish knife, the kind with a long clip blade and a scaling blade and yellow plastic scales -- yeah, it's a folder, but it has sentimental value. I used it once to defend myself and my little brother -- didn't have to cut the guy, but we would have been in trouble if I hadn't been ready to....

The only trouble with the penny method is if you have a lot of rust to scrape holding on to that little penny can get tiring, and besides, scraping close to the edge could be dangerous. So I cut a short piece of half-inch (12mm) dowel and sawed a slot in one end to epoxy a penny in, then whittled that end to a wedge shape ... and discovered I didn't need epoxy; the slot I cut with a hacksaw was thin enough that when I stuck the penny in there it stuck; it's not going anywhere. So now I've got a derusting tool ... took me only a few minutes to make and I'll probably be using it the rest of my life.

Next time I feel like doing fancy knotwork maybe I'll do some on the handle.

Great idea--I'll have to remember that one! Thanks.

Cougar, my joke signature at the bottom was supposed to say " I don't know much but at least I know THAT". Realized when I read it it seemed like I was making a smart ass remark about your post--definitely wasn't!!

With the sig I've been using lately I'm hardly in a position to accuse anyone of being a smartass!

I heard of naval jelly, but not for removing rust on guns ( usually blued, a form of rusting ) or knives. Anyone have experience with it?

Muriatic or was it sulphuric acid was used at the sheet metal and machine shop I worked at. But IIRC, after a certain point it began to etch the steel. Great surface for painting over, but you wouldn't want to dip something mirror finished in it.

Rusty I used the Naval Jelly a bit some years ago and had pretty good luck with it in removing rust. I was using it on a 1967 AMC Ambassador in order to get it ready for primer.

If you don't mind an object turning black the "Extend" product works nicely. It comes in a spray can and turns rust into a black paintable surface.
I tried another product that is similar and it seems to leave a heavier tacky feel until it's dry,its more like a paint except it turns rust black also.I don't like it as well as the "Extend"

It is the muriatic acid that's used in soldering sheetmetal. Be carful not to get it on your skin for any lengt of time or it burns pretty bad. I got into it at work one time not realizeing it when I was putting a sheet metal shield up around a huge belt sander along with an exhaust system for it.
I don't know how it would be for rust.

If you mix milk of magnesia with vodka and orange juice do you get a phillips screwdriver?

Khukuri FAQ

Yes, the muratic will take out rust but you must use caution. And DON'T get it on aluminum unless you want to see a disapering act, eats it right up quick! As for the penny trick that is pretty good thinking. If you can run across any soft copper like copper tubing or electrical bus bar you can make your self a larger scraper out of that. The penny trick works becouse the copper is harder than the rust but softer thanthe steel so it won't scratch it. Another word on the navel jell is it works great to remove heavy rust but it will also take off bluing on guns or what ever and will leave a gray finish on the metal that will need polished off.

I've used both naval jelly and Extend, the stuff Yvsa spoke of, with success. I think the Extend works a bit better in preventing reoccurring rust, especially in areas that have pitted.
