I recently came into the possession of a stainless steel knife with quite a bit of rust, but not pitted. They are cheap imports but I figured it would be good practice to clean them up and won't be too upset if they aren't picture perfect. Can anybody suggest how it could be cleaned? TIA

flitz polish or any metal polish will work. but you can see the area where you removed the rust, depends on the finish.

if it is a cheap import, I would just use a drop or two of oil and steel wool. Fairly fine grade, say 3 or 4 aught.

It's not gonna be enough for what I suspect you have here, but light surface rust can often be removed by soaking in WD40 for about ten minutes and then rubbing with a paper towel. Repeat the process several times. The WD40 contains penetrants that will penetrate the rust and loosen it up. A paper towel is just ever so slightly abrasive and will wipe off the loosened rust without scratching even a polished surface. It's a slow process and only good for very light rust freckles, but it's also very mild and not likely to cause damage.

It's just another trick to keep in your bag.

If you don't mind a satin finish 600 grit watersand paper and WD-40 will do the trick fairly quickly.

Another good trick is to use the edge of an old copper penney, It is harder than the rust, but it won't scratch the steel. (Old penney, not one of the new copper washed ones.)

There is a wealth of information at this site; it covers all the usual methods of rust removal, explains how they work, and the pros and cons of each method. It even gives instructions for electrolytic rust removal using an auto battery or auto battery charger! Check it out:

Hope this helps, Walt
