Rust removal

Hi guys,

Lately I spotted a bit of rust on one of my blades. Usually, I use a combination of 3-in-1 oil and some Fritz rust removal to take care of rust, but this rust is just below the blade edge (in that spot on a folding knife that is still in the handle at the pivot point when the blade is open, just before the blade edge begins, sorry, not sure of the technical term.) and there is another spot that can be seen when the blade is closed, looking from the top (the part that would be in the handle after the blade is fully open, again, sorry for lack of knowledge on terms here).

So, these are hard to reach places and I can't get any of the Fritz down into them, as I don't have anything thin enough to apply a coat (Q-Tips don't work) and after I did I wouldn't be sure how to remove it other than water, but if I did that I couldn't dry it afterward. I could apply a few drops of oil, which I haven't tried yet, but I don't know if that would remove the rust. It doesn't look too bad. If you guys don't think it's a big deal, given that these are small, hard to reach places and not on the blade, I won't worry about it. I just wonder if it might not grow worse over time or if the rust might bite into it, which I would hate. I haven't used this one in awhile and he's been in storage in a knife case for a few months. It might have been there awhile already so maybe it isn't a big deal.

My main concern is that this is a discontinued knife and although not valuable, because it is discontinued I'd like to keep it in good working order with as little damage as possible but I'd like to enjoy and use it as well. I could try taking the knife apart but I'm worried about getting it put back together as tight as before, so I'd like to avoid that. I don't think I can remove the blade from the metal spaces in the middle anyway, just the black scales on the outside.

This is a discontinued Benchmade Snipe, if that is any help. Again, if you guys don't think it is a problem that will grow I will ignore this, but if you have any solutions I'd like to get the rust out. Thanks guys.

Might not be too much to worry about. If the knife has been stored, the inactivity probably contributes as much to the problem as any. You might give the knife a thorough flush with WD-40. Exercise the joints as much as possible while it's wet. The WD-40 will loosen up any surface rust, and working the joints will hopefully scrub some of it away. It's up to you, but you could also wash the knife thoroughly in hot water with dish detergent (like Dawn or Ivory Liquid) after the WD-40 flush. Rinse in HOT water (120 F or so), and dry everything out with paper towels, blow dryer, etc. Then apply some WD-40 or other rust preventative in the joints. Beyond that, just exercise the joints occasionally and wipe it clean before putting it away, which will go a long ways towards keeping any other rust from taking a permanent hold.

If the knife doesn't have a wooden handle or something that can swell, I let my knives either soak in citric acid, baking soda or Coca Cola. Then I go to work on them with oils n' stuff. I had two SAKs which wouldn't open up, so I let them soak in WD-40 type stuff (CRC 5-56) for about a month. One of them was reborn, the other wasn't. So, I let it soak in citric acid for a couple of hours and it came to life again. Oiled 'em up and they were good to go. Be careful when forcing blades out that are stuck!

Corrosion-X is what I use for unreachable rust. Also to keep it off.
It is wicked, awesome stuff!
