Hi all, I've got a bead blasted Gen 3 spanto with Duratech 20CV recently and as we all know, the bead blast finish is a rust magnet and living the South East Asia, the humidity is high. The blade started developing rust spots after one day of carry and few days later, I've decided to put a hand rub finish on the flats, and everything went well for the next few weeks.

Until today, when I got home after a long day with the XM clipped to my back pocket. That's my sweat on the blade.

Wiped it off and.....

The blade is now stained. At this rate I think I can even force a patina on it :o I'm just wondering if this is normal for the steel since it's my first knife in Duratech 20CV, or did something went wrong with the HT? My S35VN seb was clipped to my right pocket the whole day and there's no rust spot on it at all.

Mine has had no issues whatsoever. And I live in a humid area.

This ones a little tricky to advise since you applied a "hand rub finish to the flats". Left untouched, it's easier to get official assistance.

My advice at this point is carry on...use and enjoy...rust will wear off, reaccumulate, and so on over time. It's all surface stuff at this point.

It is definitely a user, just that it's my first time having a stainless steel folder rust on me and Google didn't provide me with much info. Thought I'll post it up here and see if anyone had the same problem.

Always a little leary of any statement that begins with "as we all know".
The Duratech 20cv blade steel at 20.0 (chromium) is not going to present any undo predisposition to rusting/staining or anything else.
However, No steel is impervious and the fact that you are carrying and able to snap a pic with "your sweat" on the blade indicates that perhaps a different carrying methodology AND a maintenance regimen are in order moreso than concern about the blade finish.
I suggest; a different pocket OR a belt holster AND a consistent light coat of protective oil designed for guns/knives or other similar tool.
Good luck with it. It isn't a shortcoming in the knife or steel or the heat treat.

IMO it is more fruitful to seek a solution rather than "if anyone else is having the same issue" your solution is contained in my above post..... free-air carrying method (away from your body) AND a light coat of protective oil.

My duratech-20cv blade was sent out with out rust and arrived in my mailbox with rust 2 days later. I wiped down the blade with 3 in 1 oil and it still got rust spots a couple days later. I live in Ma next to the ocean, but the air is dry now so I was a bit surprised. To keep remove the surface rust I have been hitting my blade with 2000 grit paper which got rid of the spots and gave the blade a cool look. I have not had rust problems since this, I figure it is because of bead blasted pits are shallower and less aggressive. If this voids any warranty that sucks, because all you are doing is maintaining/taking care your blade. Here are before and after pictures. The 2000 grit smoothed out the edges to a satin finish on transitions on the top of the blade, which IMO gives it a great contrasting custom look.
