Hello everyone I just had a question I just got a new benchmade volli with the s30v steel and I love the knife its my edc bit I went fishing yesterday and used it to cut line cut bait rinced it in the salt water then wiped it down. This morningbi looked and I saw rust spots, I know it was from the salt water so I won't be doing that again lol but I was wondering wat is the best way to get them out. Also I wanna know what type of steel would be best to use for my fishing knife? Thanks guys Andrew

Probably salt residue remained on the blade. Rinse with fresh water next time and dry. The rust spots will come off with a little silver polish, or other mild abrasive,. I wipe down my blades with a few drops of BreakFree CLP after sharpening or washing, and rarely have rust issues.

get a spray can rust inhibitor and a scotch brite that isn't to aggressive, you want to clean not scratch. you will also want a small bottle of oil not a spray can to use to coat the blade after cleaning. as for best steel for fishing/water activities would be H1, any of spydercos salt knives will work great. even BMs H20 grip holds up very well

Hi, I am no rust expert so cant help you there on what would be the best way to get rid of it but what the best type of steel would be for a fishing knife? I would recommend you to check out the H1 steel from Spyderco (their salt knives), they are 100% rustproof as in that it should be impossible to get rust in this steel even if you drop a knife with this steel in salt water and find it a year later it still should be without any rust. Benchmade also have knives made from X15-TN and N-680, not 100% like the h1, but very high rust resistant on these steels.

Cool thanks blade I'm gonna look into those spydercos today and I'll make sure to bring a water bottle to rinse the knife instead of the salt water

H1 is really great stuff it will hold up against salt water no problem specially if you splash it with fresh water after each use in salt.

What do you guys think the best rust inhibitor is to apply before putting your knife back in the sheath. My custom is 0-1 and I stay on top of it so it never really rusts much but I'm wondering if there's sum thing good that will keep the surface rust off it longer?
Thanks

Just a note on the H1 steel. If you buy one, I personally would recommend to get one with a spyderedge (serrations) H1 is a softer steel and some find it that it does not hold its edge that long (if you are used to S30V which have a very good edge retention you might think that). But test have shown that H1 with serrations does have superb edge retention, so if that is important, H1 with serrations would be the better option. H1 is also said to be a work harnended steel that should get harder the more you sharpened it.
The only drawback as I can se with serrations is sharpening which might be more difficult (depending on the user and what you are using) Myself I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker, and I find it easy to sharpen the serrations on that, even easier than some of my plain edges to get a razor edge :)

Spyderco H1. I biked with mine in my waistband every day and sweat all over it. I never even so much as rinse the blade sit it salty sweat with no worries of rust. It is some awesome stuff.

I found the plain edge SALT 2 sharpened on coarse DMT stones with no stropping keeps its edge for a long time. Acts kinda like micro-serrations, and is a lot easier to re-sharpen.

why are you worried. You used your knife, it got a bit of rust on it ;) Occasionally I get a little rust on some of my D2 or 154cm blades. I just give it a mild polish and move on. H1 is great stuff too, but I tend to only bring mine along when I know they are going to be submerged for a period of time. Hell, I use my 1095 blades in and near the water. Wipe them down and clean them later.

Never heard about that, thanks for this info.
