Hi,

I keep looking at my coated blades and wonder if they are rusting underneath their colorful dress.

Did anybody ever strip a blade and found rustpits underneath?

Cheers

This has been asked before, please use the search function.

Rust is not uncommon in INFI steel, as it is not a total "stainless-steel" material, though it is very rust resistant.

A satin/polished blade will have better rust resistance than a coated one if well maintained. ;)

I have pimped quite a few Busse blades some had mild rust under the paint but the satin ones were rusted quite heavy under the scales.

I spend some more time searching and found some related threads. I think consensus is that nobody has to be afraid of sudden rust-attacks on INFI. However, I'll strip my blades to make sure - slowly, slowly - one after the other... :D

That is why whenever I re-handle a knife, I always use some sealant under the scales, not to help glue them on, but to keep liquids from wicking in under them. I haven't seen any sealant ever used on a Busse knife under the scales I have removed.

What type of sealant do you use Tim?

Nope. None yet. And I have taken mine swimming, both in Pools and rivers and lakes.

Every once in a while you get a spot of decarb underneath, but they are few and far in between from reports I have actually seen.

My nekid infi has had no rust issues either in the same circumstances.

I have used a few different ones, they are usually something real thin so they spread out and don't add any thickness. I'll have to look at what I'm currently using, but it is usually a thin seam sealer for outdoor clothing, it is waterproof, plyable and easy to apply. I wouldn't get too hung up on the brand, just that it is a thin sealer. I know one person that uses a clear bathroom calk.
