ok, so i was all set on getting a small sebbie, but then i encountered rust on some other knifes i had (as the weather is getting hot and humid). how susceptible are the sebbies to rust? i would HATE to have such a nice knife and never use it due to corrosion ... so far i have had an emerson, 2 spydercos (one REALLY bad) a Kershaw, and a Benchmade all rust. i carried all of them all the time and rubbed each once a week with some rust preventer from AG russel, and other places as well. each knife developes rust faster than i can remove it. this is mostly after i touch the blde (even VERY lightly such as by thumb opening), and before i am home, RUST! will a sebbie do the same? i am close, but WILL NOT stand for another ruster (which is a BIG reason i also bought a Mini Talon). suggestions, help, advice, comments?? thanks for understanding

I'm sure you know this, but just about any knife will rust if a light coat of oil is not left on the surface and it is left to te elements or "rode hard and put up wet." I tuf cloth everything and have not had a problem, ever. and my stuff gets used.
I'm not sure about the rust resistance of BG42, but I'm sure someone around here knows how good/prone it is. Tuf cloth. Tuf cloth.
cheers,
Derek

Very interesting.
I've had a Large Sebenza for several years and not a spec of rust. If it gets wet, I dry it off thoroughly. If I get fruit juice on it, I rinse it with water then dry it off thoroughly. Even my Carbon Steel Trappers stay rust free if I dry them completely. However, if I put a knife away knowing that I won't use it for weeks or even months, I'll coat it with oil first.
Good luck.

I've never had a speck of rust on any of my CRK folders, including an older ATS-34 Sebenza. I never oil my Sebenza or Umfaan blades, or Tuf Cloth them. I use it, wash it if needed, and then wipe it off. It sounds as though you may have extremely acidic body chemistry though. Some people seem to rust just about any steel just by touching it.

I carried a BM705 & a Spderco Delica for a while. In Memphis, we have MEGA-HUMIDITY & I have a very physically intense job outside which, needless to say, I perspire a gret deal. Both of the knives encountered rust no matter how much I tuf-clothed them or oiled them. I think often times in must be body chemistry or something. At the present moment, I am carrying a blade with ATS-34 which is satin polished. As of right now, no rust is appearing on the blade and we have just now started to have our hot-humid summer days, so we will see.

Oh yeah......I do not have an answer for the Sebbie regarding rust

I have used a small sebenza as a work knife in a salt water enviroment for the last 18 months with no signs of rust or corrosion.I don't put anything on it specifically for rust prevention but it does get sprayed down once every 3 to 6 weeks with WD-40 or Rem Oil or whatever is handy when I take it apart to clean and lube it.

I have seen some rust on just a few that were "users". They all had it in the same place, It is where the blade rests against the stop pin in the closed position. Which makes sense really. If there is any moisture at all on the knife this is one place where metal and metal are just barely touching where moisture could sit between the two for awhile and do its work.
The ones that I saw were not that bad, and I could also tell by the knives overall appearance that they probabaly were never taken apart and cleaned etc.

I wipe my down the blade on my Sebenza with a Sentry Solution Tuf-Cloth and have not encountered any rust problems..

I use the Tuf-Cloth on all my knives and it performs excellent..

vactor,

I have received three BG-42 blades in the last six months and it has been very wet here, broke all out 100 year records. No rust at all, the Sebenza I carry daily, a FB blade I wear IWB 2-3 times a week and a neck knife that I wear occasionally.

BG-42 seems to be fairly rust/stain resistant. I do rinse and dry after use...mostly. I also oil after a couple weeks of use and always after sharpening. If I decide to 'retire' a blade for a while, I use Rust Free, otherwise I use whatever is handy - usually olive/vegetable oil.

Get a Sebenza! And don't worry.

Appart from Glass beaded finishes that always rust for me, I have only had problems with D2 steel, that much carbon= rust magnet even with Tuf Cloth.
