Rust?

Just read a thread where they talked about Swamp Rats not doing well in the salt water areas. Well I'm right smack on the coast of Maine. All my swords try to rust in the summer, so every week is a polish, and oil. Especally if its an especally humid summer. Do swamp rats rust bad??

Well even if they do, a lot easier to clean up then a slightly rusted long sword.

Well you also have to take into consideration the Rats are coated. So you only have to worry about the edge and whatever you wear off by beating the snot out of it. :D

I'm leaving in Denmark, and by walking I'm at 10 minutes of the beach! As you guys know I'm Swamp Rat fan and mostly carry a Bandicoot as EDC.
Last summer I've been using my Bandicoot for fishing crabs with the boys and I've never seen any rust on my blade... For fun sometime I take my Battle Rat on fishing trips, we've been playing with them in the sand, opening fish, crabs and several other things in salt water...no rust... I have a buddy who use a Howling rat as diving knife, he said if he forget to wash his knife after diving some spots can appear on the edge, but it will happen on every other knives.
As long as you wash your knives with clean water after diving and put a bit of oil as you will do with every other knife, you won't have to bother with rust. ;)
If using your Rats in normal condition, no worry at all. If you live in a very wet area, just put the knife out of the sheath when you don't use it and everything will be fine :D

I think it is probably my post that you are referring to and my intent was to compare the rust resistance of INFI to SR101. I did not mean that my answered should be taken as "Rat's don't do well in Salt Water". I intended to point out INFI will be more stain resistant in salty enviroments than SR101 will.

As stated above if you keep them oiled or clean them after use you should not have any problems.

I live about 10 minutes from the Gulf, and haven't had any problems with my Rat Tail... I'll find out a bit more about it corrosion resistance this summer when I get a sheath made and spend my time working down by the beach, carrying the RT as my EDC fixed blade. I doubt there will be any problems...

I have the double-cut finished CT, which is uncoated. I do live in Aridzona but that doesn't mean we don't get any humidity, we've had more rain in the first 3 months of the year than any other time in recent history. My CT has not shown any signs of rust at all. It does not sit in a humidity controlled safe, it's out in my shop with no climate control and sits in the sheath it came in. A very light coat of oil seems to keep the rust gremlins away.
