I'm kinda new at collectin, and i recently saw a rust spot on one of my knives. I heard that silver polish is good at removing the rust spots. Can any of you more experienced blade collectors help me out with a good remedy for rust?

If you just want to remove the rust - without marring the surface further, 'Tarnite' is excellent. Just apply and wipe away the rust. The pitting from the rust will still be there, but the rust is chemically removed by oxalic acid.

It's also one of the very best general metallic oxide cleaners for silver, copper and other oxidized metals.

Some True Value hardware stores stock it. If you can't find it, you can mail order it from the True Value web site.

Hope this helps!

I would also recomend some mothers aluminum mag wheel polish. Dont use it on your rims though because most rims today are clearcoated like your paint. But it will clean up a blade in seconds. I just recently got some high quality wolfgang wax/paint sealant and put it on my BM43 too. It made it shine like never before and will last longer than almost any other type of protectant.

I used Flitz metal polisher to remove light rust, and it worked great.
You can use some other fine polishing material too, though not as effective as Flitz.

I like Breakfree CLP. Just a little goes a long way.

I wipe down all my metal tools with it and they have stood up very well.

You want to keep your knives out of the sheath and in a cool and dry spot if possible. If you carry them and they get dirty, sweating, just hit them with a rag with a little lube on it daily. Then again, this would be a working knife so you don't need to get too crazy about it.

I tried Mothers Mag Polish on rust (Carbon Japanese Chef's knife) and found it just wasn't abrasive enough. It did however do very well as a polish on other blades I have used (no Rust) that were Stainless.

I have always used Flitz, and have been happy with it but I am always looking to try other products also.

I have a friend who sells Amway. Oh yeah they are evidently still around. They make some stainless steel cleaning pads that look similar to the old SOS or Brillo pads of old. Now they are a bit coarser than those 2 but they don't seem to scratch the existing metal. I have had great luck using those along with one of the better polishes on the market i.e. Flitz, MAAS ECT.

I have also used a cleanser called Bar Keeper's Friend and have had great luck on certain jobs.

Let me try again- I restore knives. Squirt the rust with WD 40, scrub it with 0000 steel wool. This is a very general cleaning procedure. Other methods may or may not work better, but it's what I use every day. The steel wool won't scratch high polish blades, nor should it mar satin finished ones.

Steel wool will remove orange rust but will do little to the black oxide, you can sand that off but that means you have to redo the entire surface, the chemical agents can ocalize the rust. Even vinegar can be used in this manner to break down the oxides, it will also induce them if you leave it on to dry so you have to clean the blade well after.

If it is just a stain and not really pitted most lube/cleaners will remove it. If it is really pitted and rusty a wire wheel on a grinder works very effectively althought you will have to take some emery cloth to the blade to remove the scratches. If the knife is that far gone I'm not sure it is worth the effort.
