My knife is peppering quite a bit. Is there any way to get rid of, and prevent it without either making the blade all smelly, or making it unusable on food?

Thanks.

some polish like flitz or mothers will take it right out.

or some fine grit sandpaper, 600 or finer depending on the finish grade.

as far as prevention, keep it dry and clean it after use. some oil them, but that may not be suitable for food.

Wait till tomorrow & pick up some of the 0000 steel wool. Along with some Simichrome, Flitz, or Maas.

afer you shine it up if there is any chrome in it, rub it with the shiny side of aluminum foil, it's on old hot rodders trick to make shiney parts more shinier up the chrome parts

Bar Keeper's Friend or even a little baking soda can be used to take the rust off gently. I read some place that Renaissance Wax would clean and protect. I saw that Lee Valley has something similar: Conservator's Wax. I went to check it out and was almost knocked over by its pungency. I like to be able to use my knives on food. I did buy Beeswax Salad Bowl Finish, which smelled very nice, being made of bees' wax and mineral oil, but I not sure how effective it would be at removing stains from a blade.

Ive used a kind of silver polish to remove light rusting in the past cant recall its name right now. basically you have chemical options and abrasive options probably any chemical that removes rust shouldnt be injested. ive heard of peole using lard to prevent rusting but im not sure about using it on food if its been sitting a while

I'd be very careful using Bar Keeper's Friend on any quality blade.

Thanks for the words of caution. I have used it on my carbon steel blades, users like the Opinel folders. If used too vigorously, it might remove the patina. But then, my carbon steel blades are not high quality.

that silver polish is called Wright's, sells for maybe 3.00 3.50

Certain things i try & protect i go over with plain old waxed paper, like a stove top for example, for a knife for food it would not do nothing for the food as you use it for lining baking pans etc. i use it in my microwave also cause they tend to get real ugly

Off topic, for your shower after you clean it, go over the shower walls with car polish i used turtle wax, works, don't use on tub.
