rust?

1A,
Apparently, Emerson switched to SS on the one side of the liner-lock models and there have been some reports of rust. Doesn't make sense to me.

I haven't talked to Emerson about this issue. It was a couple months ago that it happened to me and I have personally cleaned it off with some WD40 and I haven't been camping again nor exposed it to the same conditions. If i happens again I can post pics and contact Emerson, until then I don't think I'll expose my S-Comm to potential rust because it's quite pricey and I'm not sure how expensive it would be to send it back to Emerson from Canada.

Though it sounds like it's an isolated case on my part.

They have reportedly switched to Stainless steel on at least one side for the time being for cost cutting issues. Frankly, I don't see why cost would be an issue for EKI, those knives run $200 plus easy, not including the stuff on ebay.

Just because it is stainless steel, doesn't mean it won't rust, I think most of us on here know that. It means what it says, stain-less, and it does just that. It stains less than other steels. If taken care of they won't rust for a very long time, but eventually it can't be helped. I'm just happy that my commander has both Titanium liners since it is a 2006 model. I took mine to the beach and it is still spot free.

I posted a quote in the other thread on this that was a note from Ernest Emerson directly that he posted on another forum. Titanium prices are up across the board, it is hitting everything that is made of Ti right now. In the thread that I copied from someone had called and asked Emerson about the increase in cost and he reportedly told the individual, as posted in the thread, that the sheets that the liners have been punched out of and are a skeletonized sheet are getting as much for scrap value as Emerson originally paid for a full sheet of Titanium in the first place. The switch to the SS non locking side liner went into effect in around March 2007.

The change to SS is a way to mitigate the cost increase that Emerson knives incurs without raising the price on the knives. A lot of people seem to think that the SS liner should not be use and at the same time the cost of the knives should not increase but that is just not how business works. As the cost of raw materials increases a company will need to maintain its profit margin to stay in business so they have 2 choices raise the cost of their product or find other ways to cut their own costs to produce the product at its current price point.
