So I took my small seb apart to lube and clean. Noticed a bit of foreign matter right on the framelock. Looks a bit orange in color, and I can't get it off with soap and water and a rough towel. Thoughts? Is this normal? How do I remove without compromising the metal?

Thanks.

Could be the ball...is it made of steel?

You can try to polish with a mixture of oil and abrasive dust and a wooden stick with textile or cotton at the end.

No idea. How would the ball affect it though? It is off to the side of it. Sorry for the bad pic.. tried multiple times.

Will that weaken the metal, and make it more prone to rust in the future though?

AFAIK, titanium does not rust, but I was wrong once. It is probably old lubrication of some kind that has either stained or welded itself on to the metal. This can be difficult to remove, and as long as it is not impairing function I would not worry about it. CRK selectively heat treats the tip of the lock that bears against the back of the blade to reduce wear, so I would not use an abrasive in this area for fear of affecting the thin layer of hardened titanium. My only suggestion would be to soak it in solvent like Break Free overnight and see if it comes loose. If not, closer her up and put her back to use!

I think what you see is oxidation on the titanium, the lockbar was hardened in that area using heat. Let it be, it does no harm.

+1 for Flava, if you watch the CRK DVD the lock bar face is heated very hot, I wouldn't worry about it.

You guys are the best. Thanks. I guess I will leave it alone. I have to admit, I used a LITTLE bit of sandpaper on it. A little... and when I noticed nothing happened but some fine scratches... I stopped. I didn't hurt the "thin layer of hardened titanium"?

A few scratches that aren't even on the business end of the hardened part are nothing to worry about :)

Nice! I am so paranoid about it. I was worried I scratched off some sort of special sealant placed on it.. and NOW am gonna make it rust. LOL. Dang.

Thanks for the help!
