Last weekend,I pulled out my BK9 and was surprised to find that the heads of the fasteners holding the handle onto the knife were totally rusted but not the blade.I thought the coating on the screw was enough to prevent rust.So anyways what is the finish on the screws. Actually the last time ,I used there was light rain outside. Any advise?

I would submerge those screws in Ferox (rust converter) then treat the threads with iron brush or similar, if needed.

Mine did the same thing. I just took the screws out, sprayed them with gun oil, scrubbed them clean, and put them back in.

I know a few people have gone to the hardware store and bought stainless screws/nuts.

I dont remember the size needed but if you look around the forum you'll find it.

plain steel screws with a simple coating... given half a chance, they'll rust from sweat, rain, whatever, eventually... go stainless..

We live in Concord, CA, and even in a dry summer climate, the handle screws on my BK7 still rusted. Here's what I did:

Get standard slotted-head screws & nuts in stainless (10-24 thread) and hold them over a gas flame with pliers (kitchen stove) for a minute. Drop them in a glass of water, and they'll be a dark purple color, and it's fairly durable. You might have to work the diameter of the screw heads down a little, which I did with a drill & sand paper.

I carry waterproof matches in the scales of my BK7, and a SAK in the sheath pouch - I use the SAK screwdriver on the scales.

Thanks for the advise and the input guys.It seems that it's a fairly common problem. The best solution is to switch them to stainless hardware.

take the bolts and nuts out, heat up with a heat gun and soak in oil. Reinstall and wipe dry.

Bushman,I'm going to go stainless but I definitely going to clean the rust off and put them aside.

Just a friendly update.I cleaned off the screws with some mineral oil,a quilted paper towel, and a Q-Tip. The rust was incredibly easily to remove and just wiped off.

I decide against applying heat to the hardware and soaling it in oil. Here are the screws with some new micarta handle that arrive last week. They were very dry looking, so I applied some mineral oil.
