Rusting already?

Hello BF. I'm new to knives, and got myself a full-sized Griptilian last Monday. I've noticed, however, that there is a small brown-ish dot near the Benchmade logo. Right over where the (R) symbol should be, actually. Like I said, I've had this knife for less than a week, and it's never touched water, so I hope it's just the (R), especially since 154CM is supposed to be somewhat rust-resistant. However, the coloration is not as dark as the rest of the Benchmade logo, being slightly browner. Hopefully, it's not rust, especially since I don't have any special tools to remove it with.

I noticed something else about the Grip too. Is it just me, or is it possible to swing open the Grip as if you had disengaged the AXIS lock without actually disengaging it? Obviously, it's slower and requires a bit more force, but I've been able to do it.

Yes, you can swing open the blade with just centrifugal force.

I both a full size 551 Grip and a mini 555. Both are in 154cm and I've not had any trouble with rust. Maybe it's just some kind of discoloration from the logo. You can pick up some metal polish most anywhere and try to remove it. Keep an eye on it. If it grows you may have a problem but it's probably just a stain of some kind.

Welcome to Bladeforums.

You can swing it open, but I use the thumb stud. In my opinion, it is the perfect resistance to prevent openings. The axis lock does not lock the blade closed. So the axis lock is not engaged in the closed position, only the open position. Try a little soap and water on a qtip and swab that area, it may be gunk or pivot lube discolored from the factory, but 154 does not corrode. I get mine wet all the time, there is no rust.

Cool, thanks for the advice, guys. I'll try some soapy water now. If that doesn't work, I'll see what I can do about getting some metal polish. And maybe some lube while I'm at it.
