Rusting La Griffe

Help! I have now worn my Emerson La Griffe for a couple of months and it is rusting. I wiped it down with a Marine Tuf-Cloth every week or so, but when I pulled it out last night I noticed a disturbing amount of rust right along the line where it goes into the sheath, plus some spots on the blade.

I thought the black coating was supposed to prevent rust. It is not scratched or anything. In fact it looks like the rust is on top of the coating. ???

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong? Is there any way to get the rust off without ruining the coating? What should I do?

I noticed the samething on my CQC7 I thought it was perhaps the lighting (wishful thinking) or I was on crack, but I just noticed mine yesterday. Hadn't had a chance to order a new tuff cloth, but I have been doing a good job keeping it clean otherwise. Any suggestion on how to get it off with out ruining the finish?

d:(

I had the same thing happen to a CRKT of mine (f-ing bead blast). Someone told me to try a pencil eraser on the rust spots. So, I got a #2, used a little elbow grease, and bingo! The rust was gone. Don't ask me how the eraser did it, but it did it. :D

Use a penny to scrape the rust off the blade. The copper is softer than the metal used in the blade and will remove the rust. Won't do wonders for the finish though.

I' ve had the same situation soon after wearing the La Griffe next to the skin. Tuff cloth, Flitz, etc. didn' t help much. I am thinking of removing the black coating and buffing the handles lightly to a semi satin finish. If I recall correctly, the LaGriffe is made of 154CM and is corrosion resisitant enough. May sound a bit strange, but I don' t think the black coating is more corrosion resistant than semi finished 154 CM steel. Am I making sense here?

heyz folks,
Its kinda weird that you all are experiencing these troubles...I am now living in south east asia, where it is known for its temperature and high humidity, but I haven't experienced any trouble with my La Griffe...
Guess I am just lucky...:D

I tried a pencil eraser on my La Griffe and it worked! Thank you for the suggestion!

After cleaning up my La Griffe with the eraser I do wonder if what I'm seeing is really rust. It certainly looks like rust, but it does not go through the black coating to the steel. Could some kind of chemical reaction cause the coating itself to form that brownish stuff?

If that stuff is rust it must part of the coating and not part of the underlying steel.

In any case, I am very happy to have my La Griffe cleaned up again! :)
