Wich steel rusts more/faster 1095 or O1?
Anyone with experience in both steels?

Thanks

Jonas

They both rust easy, it would be hard to tell them apart. I would be more concerned with toughness and wear resistance between the two. IMO 0-1 is a hair better then 1095 but it would come down to hardness and heat treat thats more important.

Hmm. Interesting. I agree with gine, as far as his concern about toughness vs wear resistance, vs, corrosion resistance. Its a happy marriage between what you want. I make knives out of both of those steels and personally I like the 01 better. Just because the 01 is tougher, seems to keep a better edge, but 1095 is a little more corrosive resistant. but, anybody that buys a custom knife made of either one of those isn't going to abuse it. Example: Your gonna take care of it. Your not gonna buy a 70k BMW and take it muddin any more than your gonna buy a custom knife out of any of these materials then leave blood from game on it or put it away wet. Saying that. if you put a minimal amount of care into them, either one is a great steel that will never fail you. just my 2 cents.

I have some home made 01 kitchen knives and Ontario 1095 knife that I use in the kitchen. Both work well, the 01 seems to hold an edge a little better than the 1095. I have not officially tested rust formation on them. From casual observation, the 01 seems to get rust spots more readily than the 1095.

I agree with TMHunt, just remember to take care of it and you should be good to go.

IME, O1 rusts a little faster but the difference is small. I would pick O1 over 1095 if given the choice.
