Poor Rusty. He just called and said he got email with a link -- "somebody sent you a greeting card" or something like that. He opened it and there went his computer. He wanted me to post this so folks would know what happened, especially those awaiting email replies from him.

I can't help -- don't know enough.

Hope Rusty will get some good antiviral software along with firewall software which, along with never opening unsolicited email or email attachments, should reduce further risk that this will happen again...

ZoneAlarm Pro and Norton antivirus work for me on my PC emulator.

I really can't understand what joy the virus folks get out of it. They must be some sick pups.

Got one this AM from a "carl" with a subject resembling "X#@%$S". Couldn't figure out whether it was a nut or a relative, but both categories get dumped unopened :D

Must be why you haven't answered the email I sent you yesterday or the day before.

Maybe you didn't get it, Wal. Or maybe my server blew it when I tried to send it. It was just a short note to see how you were doing since you had been uncharacteristically quiet and I wanted to make sure everything was okay.

Seems I have my answer. ;)

Give Rusty a day or two to reinstall Windows and he'll be back online :)

For everyones general computer info. I find its a good idea to copy, My Documents file, my E-Mail list and Outlook, Contacts section(I keep all my contacts, addresses and phone numbers). I copy it on a CD and update it weekly. You could do the same on a Zip drive. I lost almost everything ONCE, and that was the first and last time. Once you do it, ti doesn't take much to update.

Hi:

Good advice by Apothecary. I use Norton antivirus also. Be sure to update it every few weeks. This goes for any brand of antivirus software.

A standard version of Zone Alarm is available for free at www.zonelabs.com It is considered by many to be the best firewall available at any price.

The other general warning is do not open any attachments with the letters exe in them. This stands for execute and is the most common means of transmitting a virus. The only way I will open an exe attachment is if I receive a phone call from a person I know telling me to expect an email with an attachment. Even though my antivirus software scans my emails as they are downloaded, I perform a second scan prior to opening the email.

Be careful out there in cyberland!!

What happened to this second half of 2001? It seems all sort virus makers are launching their attacks!

Pakcik Bill - do you installed firewall in your server?

Uncle, I didn't have a zip drive or cd burner for a while but I investegated both, I borrowed a zip drive from a friend and decided for me, since I could only get one, the cd burner made more sense. Both units initally cost the same, the BIG difference is the cost of the zip discs and CD's. Zip discs are very expensive about $18.00 each, CD's are .75 cents each, but the zip can make a disc to restart your computer if you get taken down. I have recovery discs. So I opted for the CD burner. You can copy everything of importance and update it regularly with a CD RW burner.

Hello Mohd:

Glad to see you again. I take it you are busy since you do not visit us like days of old.

When nephew Travis was here he brought his Zip drive and burned a recovery disc for me which I have stashed -- somewhere! And I do have zone alarm installed and use a virus program called Pcillin. And as mentioned, my MO is if there is any doubt whatsoever, I don't open attachments to my email. So far I have been lucky.

Am I still here? Apparently. Arghh.

Do not buy stock in Great Basin Internet, if you want my suggestion.
