I picked up a LaGriffe a few months ago -- liked the design- and consider it an ideal "neck Knife". I live in a hot and humid area and always wear the knife when I go running. I never considered coating the blade with oil or tough cloth since I don't want to increase the chance of it falling out, and wasn't worried about rust with the coating. Hell, my commander has been in salt water plenty of times and never rusted and I only coat the edge w/ tough cloth. Yesterday I pulled the LaGriffe out of its sheath for the first time in a long time and it was covered with rust. Not only was the edge rusted, but the areas coated w/black had also rusted. Even the hole where you put your index finger had rusted. Has anyone else had this problem or do I just sweat acid? Is this the same steel/blade coating as the commander or has it changed? I couldn't believe that the areas covered with the black coating rusted also. I tried removing the rust w/wd40 and it didn't work too well---I am going to soak the knife for a few days in wd40 and try to remove the rust w/steel wool.

whoa. I wear mine running/to the gym everyday and i have yet to notice anything like this.

hold on, *snunk* hmm... yeah no rust at all.

Jim, I wear mine everyday and never get rust. Might be your body comp.
Anyway, try soaking it in car anti-freeze for a few days. This has helped me remove rust in the past.

JimP,
I have had similar experiences w/ my La Griffe and other ATS 34 Knives.
Unfortunately the Moniker "Stainless" does imply that, but that is and has not been the case. Ferrous Oxide "Rust" can and will occur
and the specific composition of ATS 34 has enough in it to rust.
I merely clean and wipe down all my weapons
on a routine basis and especially after training or working a long day.
The post that Lifter4him made sounds like a good idea to try.
I have found NO coating that will never elimininate the possibility of rust occuring.
They can and will mitigate or deter it from occuring. If someone knows let me know.
Black T, Teflon, K-Kote, TiALNitride etc.
et al.

With a good swipe of Tuff Cloth, I have been able to ride an average of 200 per week on my bike with the La Griffe against my skin. No rust at all. And that' s a lot of moisture under winter clothing. The handle area contacting the body shows coating fading but that' s all. It is true that no stainless is truly stainless, only resistant. But try some Flitz metal polish first before going to the soaking method. Flitz does indeed remove rust and corrosion without any harm to the coating. It has worked on the bluing on firearms quite well. The black coat on the La Griffe may fade a bit but it is a good tradeoff having the corrosion removed. Try it. It really works.
