Got my new Sher BAS UBBB. Lovely little thing. As advertised, a little rust at the tip. Sanded that off down to very shallow pitting, oiled well, and returned to sheath.

Two days pass. (Tick Tock, etc.)

Removed new baby from sheath. What's this?! Rust again?!!! At the tip. As bad as before. %$&#$#%!

Then I noticed that the leather end of the sheath has a distinct pinkish cast from just above the chape down.

Uncle has a lot of UBB's lately with rust at the tip.

Is this some sort of "chronic" caused by something corrosive in the (take you pick) wood, leather, or whatever?

Prior thread suggested washing out leather before using for a sheath to remove tanning salts. What do you do to a completed khukuri sheath to exorcise the rust demons without ruining the sheath?

(Sorry, Rusty, I could not resist.)

Noticed the same "pink" area on the scabbard of the new Chiruwa AK - but no rust...
They might have a problem with the leather. My Pen-Knife`s scabbard is made of quite rough but thick leather, the frog was a bit smelly (as I mentioned in another thread).

The sheath on my new BAS is the same. No new rust yet, but that probably has alot to do with me polishing the blade all the time.

Here are a few thoughts,
1) Leather sheaths, in some countries they use bull urin to help cure the leather, hense the horrible smell (alot of south american countries do this, once the leather gets warm it really sinks).
2) If they did use bull urin to cure the leather this could explain some of the rust, urin is very acidic.
3) Some times viniger is used, once again very acidic.
4) Try some clear nail polish on the tip see if this helps.
5) Take some water and wash it out, in the least it may delute what ever is in the causeing damage.

That is it from out here in left field. Hope you get it cured before to much more damage accures.

I've had several scabbards with reddish ends. I thought it was rouge.

When I get a blem that has rusted, I remove it from the scabbard and hang the empty scabbard by a heater duct for a few days. I figure it has absorbed and retained some moisture inside the wood. This seems to be effective, I've never had a problem with rust coming back.

...now I'm going to look for the Pink. But every new KHuk I go through much like Raghorn. I oil or treat the handles, wipe and clean the blade, sharpen as neccesary. What's strange about this mystery is many khuks are apparently suffering the same disease. Is this a feature of tanning or moisture along the trip or? I like the urine explanation best. Doesn't have to be Bull urine, I'd imagine....

I was thinking of the Kamis...or maybe the leather guys laughing and not wanting to walk too far away from their work bench...save time. Besides, the Bull always gets real angry when you hold a bottle under his legs.
Or he doesn't get angry at all...and you don't know what kind of flui--

What about cleaning, washing, drying well, then spray clear acrylic inside as a fixative?

The possible Shadow?

Why did Rusty show up with practical advise?

Why does Bill think Rusty is a mystery, when I think Bill is unfathomable?

What about the Bull?

Are there mysteries in life science will never know the answers to?

OK. I'll try rinsing it out with water. I suppose I should wedge the throat open before letting it dry. We're going to get our lowest temps of the Winter this weekend, so it will by drier than normal inside.
