a mate of mine is selling his katana for what seems to be a rather attractive price (AUD$250).

the sword has the word "Defender" on one side of the blade down near the hilt and "China" on the other side.

it's a damascus blade and appears to be made of high carbon steel.

now, for that price, i'm not expecting the sword carried by Musashi himself, but i'm wondering if they are any good, or pure wall hangers.

the blurb that came with the sword reads like this:

For more than 2600 years, the "City of Treasure Sword", Longquan, is known for making the best swords in the world. Located within the border of South Zhejiang, and under the Fengyang Mountain, Longquan is rich in resources which are ideal for crafting swords.

During the period of Warring States (770-476 B.C.), a famous sword maker named Ou Yezi created the most renowned sword in Longquan. Since then, the secret arts of crafting swords have been passed down from generation to generation.

Ryumon and Masahiro swords are hand forged by master craftsmen with years of experience from Longquan. These master sword smiths combine modern knowledge with traditional secrets to produce superior quality swords known for their durability, sharpness, and exquisite craftsmanship.

the fittings look fairly cheap'ish and the Saya is nothing flash, but the whole shebang is fairly solid.

so, anyone got any idea what this thing is? is it even halfway decent? or is it the Katana equivalent of a pakistani butterknife?

it will probably see service as a tool for keeping pigs at a distance when i go bowhunting (i wouldn't use a $2,000 sword for that purpose, but $250 won't make me cry if/when it snaps).

any input would be greatly appreciated.

Trust a 250 dollar chitana to keep feral pigs away? Um no, I think not. Spend the money on a nice boar spear instead. If it's me I want to keep feral pigs at a LONG distance.

Unless you want a $250 wall hanger, mediocre at best, for absolutely no practical purpose, don't spend the dough. A Hanwei practical plus can be had new for around the same money. Check the 'Evil online auction site'.
