I'm gonna pick up a folding trident this weekend and have a few questions about the opening.

Does the S.A.T. system wear out quickly?

How hard do you have to push the thumbstud to get it going compared to a kershaw?

Thanks for any help you can give :)

Can't offer much info on the folding Trident as I don't own one but my Flash II's S.A.T. design is very good, got both my brothers this knife but their regional manager told them carrying it at work was a no-no.Sheeple! So they got Blink's,they cut a lot at work, mostly cardboard and tape, quite a bit actually and have been using them for two years.Beyond sharpening them they are not very good with knife maintenence.Youngest brother was bitchin' about his Blink not opening as fast as it did when new so I cleaned it up for him, lots of adhesive tape gunk in it,lubed it and it flicks right open like new.He thanked me and asked me what I did.I laughed and told him to just bring it over when it needed cleaned again. This post may be moot as I don't know if the S.A.T. design on the Flash's and the Blink's are the same as the folding Trident's. :)

I have a SOG Flash II and after a countless number of openings it still works like the day I got it. I can't give you a comparison to the assisted kershaws because I have never used one, and even if I had I really don't know if the trident opens any faster (or slower) then the Flash II.

I tried a flash the other day to open it it feels like the strength to click a finger, to push open...

I don't own one, but have opened them literally hundreds of times. Very fast and easy to open, just a slight pressure on stud is all that is needed.

SOG assisted wearing out quickly does not seem to ever happen. As I have said in many other post, the worst I have ever heard of with SOG assisted openers has been clips getting bent.

And this seemed to almost always be because of operator error :D . Such as catching on doors, cabinets etc............. :o

I have both the SOG Trident and the Kershaw Leek. I like them both, but will say that I find the Leek easier to open because of the Index Open. At first the thumbstud on the Trident was tougher but I got used to it, but that Index Open feature makes opening much easier.

I have had a Trident Folder Tiger Stripe for about 6 months now. It has seen a lot of use, from light to hard, and has not given me any trouble at all. Got a lot of heavy use while I was in NO this past month. From cutting open a gazillion boxes of MREs and cases of water to cutting string, cord and rope. Handled every task in supreme fashion and looked good doing it.

the blade on my Flash II gets wobbly and it pisses me off, i wouldnt be surprised if the same thing happens with the Trident

dniice87,
2 choices here, send it in for a check/warranty/repair, or fix it by tightening pivot by using a 5/64th allen head wrench. :D

By you saying it gets wobbly, does this mean you have tightened before and it loosens ?

If the latter is correct, you need to remove pivot screw (right side) and use loctite to keep it from getting wobbly or loose again.

*Here is a trick if it's been a little loose all along.......tighten until blade barely opens, or opens very slowly....then leave it alone.

Then put one drop of oil in pivot area and open many times. After you open it about 30 or 40 times, it will begin to get fast again but it will be tight.

I just got my trident black tini on friday 10/14/05 and have already been cutting stuff all weekend with it including Florida pond muck and fishing line. I've opened it at least 200 times and it's still going. I'll be interested to see how it holds up also. My only other sog is a seal 2000 which aided in the recent killing of a rattlesnake inside my house!

i recently got a sog trident and the sat is awesome. (assisted closing would be neat too! but probably would lose a finger)

however as mentioned, the blade was the tiniest bit wobbly out of the box (item was brand new but box was not sealed so i cant comment on how it came from manufacturer). at first i tightened it too much and it really killed the assisted part of assisted opening. ive got it at just the right tightness now that it doesnt wobble and the assisted opening is still a dream of ease, smoothness, and speed. but i dont know if it will have any problems maintaining that level of tightness/non-wobliness over a period of many openings because i have not owned it long enough
