How good is the highly compressed epoxy and woven glass composite handle? How would you compare it as far as durability to the AFCK carbon fiber handle? The 710 has a nice looking blade! I would like to use that as far as utility purposes, is that a good idea or do you rcommend something else?

IMHO, the 710 has one of the best utility blade shapes I've had the pleasure of using. Perfect point, a bit of recurve, and a good amount of belly. The edge is also thick enough not to chip out too easily, but thin enough to cut well.

I wouldn't worry about the G-10. The finish on the 710's G-10 is exactly pretty, but its tough as hell.

Bladeswinger, does "good" = "durability" in your question? In the normal sense of the word (durability), I would take G-10 anyday over carbon fiber. However, the 710 was also offered in a limited edition with aluminum scales and an M2 blade. Some people may be concerned about scatching the black aluminum but I have not had any scratches on mine to date. Imo, for metal handle lovers the aluminum scales offer a different kind of "durability" over G-10. The 710HSAL is no longer in production; however, you might find one in the aftermarket if it is the sort of "durability" you're looking for.

Edit: Oops, my bad. The 710AL comes with a 154CM blade (not M2). My confusion is because I was contemplating the swap of an M2 blade on a pre-pro 710 with the 154CM on the 710AL (I like the aluminum scales). I never went through with the plan but I belive Steve Harvey had made the swap on his knives and liked the results. (I envy him). :D

Thanx Buzzbait, I checked the BM site and was unable to find the 710 G-10, can you help me find a picture? This maybe my next purchase!

G-10 is the standard scale material of the 710. It's available on all of them. BM tends to refer to it as "glass-reinforced resin material" but it's all G=10.

BTW, Buzzbait said it--the 710 is one of BM's best design successes!;)

Just a little info on my meaning of "durablity". Can you use it as a striking weapon, for example, can you hammer fist it into someone's head?

Well... It seems to be a good choice for my next. I like the good reviews you all have to say about it, it helps me easily make up my mind! I guess the Cold Steel Recon 1 folder may have to wait!

AFCK 806D2 comes in G10, I haven't seen a carbon fiber version.

I would tend to think that any kind of non-POS blade can be "hammer-fisted into someone's head" without it falling apart.

As to why you would want to do that when you have a perfectly good pointy end on the knife... :)

I tend to use the blade as a last resort. If I can strike the butt of the knife into an attackers face to slow him down enough to get to a safe area then no need to "slash and thrust" but if the attack continues.... Then, alternative measures will be taken! ;)

There is enough handle at the butt-end of the 710, so that it could be used as an impact device.

BTW, if you order a new one, the latest models are being shipped with bronze bushings. You might want to check that out if you are a "bronze bushing" fan.

I have dropped my 710 onto the tarmac while riding a bike, the SS liners some dents but the G10 after wiping with oil looks like nothing happened to it!

I have a 705, the 710's baby bro, and it is PLENTY durable, and will withstand plenty of abuse I'm sure :)
Matt
