I have a big stack of fire brick and a couple gas burners my dad's friend gave me that is retired from a foundry. How would I tell soft brick from hard or does it even matter? He has a barn full besides what he has given me. If I did build a forge with these should I use refractory or something on top of them?
He also gave me 2 gas burners from there that he said would melt anything. I guess it is natural gas? Should I even attempt to use these or just build/buy propane burners?
Thanks,
Ric

You could make a firebrick forge which would work well. Now for the burners and regulator. First thing make sure they are in good condition you do not want to go BOOOOOM .
The burners are really easy to make from parts from Home Depot. The regulator should be adjustable to regulate the pressure. See my website on building a forge.

those look like hard firebrick, soft ones are white and you can carve them with your fingernail and they break real easy.

I am a p#ss when it comes to this whole gas thing anyway. I have had two different buddies blow their self up lighting pilot lights. They both lived but are scared up really bad. I have had this stuff for probably a year now and haven't done anything because I knew nothing about it. I think I probably would have more faith in making/buying new burners. I love your site. I have checked it out before and have it in my favorites but I must have missed the forge stuff before.
So can I use this hard firebrick? I read a post the other day about hard VS soft but the d@mn search isn't working for me right now. Comes up saying page can not be displayed. I have a bunch of these bricks and sure would like to use them if I can.

Now what do you intend to do with the forge??? Just for forging and heat treating??? A brick forge will take a long period of time to get to welding temp. If I was going to build a brick forge I would put it all together with furnace cement. The biggest problem would be mounting the blower. If you have any question feel free to call me 508 999 7090. :D
Talking about going BOOOOM. Last week when Paul Sabin came over to make Damascus I put a firecracker in my welding forge. I almost p'd my pants laugh'g because of the way it scaried him. HEHEHE!!!

Now that's just wrong!!! I love it! :D
I want to make damascus some day. I have a coal forge. Just had free brick and wanted to see if I could use them. :D I wouldn't mind just coating them with something. Overkill doesn't bother me if I could make it efficient. But if it would take twice as long to heat, I would skip it. I would think that would be cheaper in the long run.
