Going out today. The Damascus on this knife is sooooo nice! Even the S guard is Damascus. :D Knife by Chad Cunningham, no nonsense knives for no nonsense folks.

Thank you! and yes, that square of stitching serves two purposes, holding the keeper strap and connecting the belt loop. The wedging of the keeper strap makes both the strap and the loop connection stronger.

I'm not sure of the physics but the same theory works when the stitching is at the top of a belt loop. Adding a spacer in between is much stronger than simply stitching the two halves together.
 
Don't mean to be nit-picky.....ahhh, maybe I do...but I believe the Mexican loop (as I know it anyway) has the slots cut out of the fold-back, then when the pouch is inserted through the slots, it forms the belt loop. Very common in gun leather.
 
No worries, I originally learned this version from an old holster maker, I believe Stohlman was his name. ;)

I've seen at least two other variations of the mexican loop on holsters and knife sheaths, though as usual I cant find any of the pics. You've probably seen one recently that was stitched up the front with leather lace, I wish I could remember the fellows name.
