Guys, I've got my eye on an S&M Coke Bottle. It's a great looking knife, and I am looking to buy this one to use. Nothing heavy, just everyday stuff for a "cube rat". How does their 420 stainless hold an edge? I don't want to have to sharpen it every time I cut up a few boxes to put in the recycling. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I've got an S&M Horticulturist's which is in 420. It was a little dull out of the box, but it sharpened up easily enough, it holds the edge well but I mainly use it for light stuff. My main complaint was that it had some blade wobble.

I thought the Coke Bottle was ATS-34 though.

I find the 420HC that S&M uses to be good.

I can sharpen it to a razor edge, and it holds.
More?

Unfortunately, I had exactly the same problem with the same pattern:mad:

But, it certainly does get keen and it stays that way,so it's a very acceptable stainless for a pocket-knife.

Have a sowbelly in their 420HC, and much like our friend Mr. Moonie and the other people here in this thread, I find it to be a very nice steel. It's not S30V or VG-10 when it comes to edge holding, but it will strop sharp very fast.

Their is something to be said for a steel that you can keep razor sharp by stropping a few mins before you put her in your pocket for the day.

I like that I can cut our kids food up with it, or peel an apple and not have to worry about how fast I have to clean it up. Carbon steel is great don't get me wrong, but it's also kind of nice to not have to worry about anything.

When I reprofiled the blades it did not feel like 420HC at all, more like 154cm IMHO. They must be running it pretty hard with their heat treat.

It's good stuff, I say jump if you like the pattern
