Hi. I'm about to get my first Doctor's knife, and first quality slip joint knife in general -an S+M 1995 or 1996 with pearl or green bone (haven't decided on which yet).
I'm currious if anyone can give me any ideas on the usefulness of the spatula blade in day to day carry. I understand it's used for mixing and separating crushed pills by design. Any other thoughts?
Also, does anyone know what steel S+M used in 95-96 and if either knife is different in any other meaningfull way besides handle material? -Thanks.

The spatula was and is used for compounding creams. It is also helpful in sorting pills. I'm a physician and still make a fair amount of house calls. Although I own a doctors knife I keep a swiss champ in my medical bag at all times

Siggyhk, The Series 5 & 6 S&M I believe are 420 HC. I use 420HC blades and find them to be OK for my use. I believe 420HC to be as good as Case's Stainless blades of course it's not as good as ATS-34 in some of S&M's Knives. As far as spatula blade use about the only thing I can think of I would use it for is to spread Mayo on a Blony Dog Samich...

I'm a Pediatrician and I alway thought the wooden stick name (tongue blade) came from the knife blade. :barf:

I always thought those sticks were called "AHHH sticks" cause the doc puts it in your mouth and tells you to say "AHHH".

Actually, the spatula end is used for making pastilles, which are small pill shaped tablets that are rolled with the end of the spatula into a small pill. Also, the flat bottom of the knife is use to crush tablets.(a pharmacists interpretation)

I was sent, by mistake, a Doctor with a spat blade instead of a pen blade, I returned it as I did not know what to do with a spat blade.

But the versatility of the spat blade for illegal pharmacy could blow ones mind!

The spatula blade can be pressed into service as a flathead screwdriver, and it can be used for all sorts of poking, prodding and light prying that you wouldn't want to use something sharp for. I find a spatula blade to be quite useful- the Vic Minichamp that lives on my keychain has a spatula blade, and I use it all the time. I used it last night to reattach the handle on a pot lid that had unscrewed and fallen off. I use it to tighten the pulls on drawers that have loosened. If you have ingrown toenails, the spatula blade can be used to pry out the corners so you can clip them off. I often use it to service my son's toys and equipment- plastic baby stuff has lots of clips that need to be pryed back to open, stuff that you can't pull back with a fingernail, but not tough enough to require a big screwdriver. I use it to wedge in and pop out batteries from remote controls and other electronic stuff.

I like spatula blades.

Thanks for all the info..
Has anyone ever tried to put an edge on a spatula blade, and do you think it's the same steel as the main blade?

Hi. I just wnted to bump this up one time. I did get the pear doc from 1995. It's a beauitiful knife indeed.
Coming bsck to the spatual issue, I didn't really expect it to tapper (thicken up) at the base to the tip like it does. In any event, I still am toying with the idea of having someone put and edge on it. I almost feel like it would need a full regrind for it to work due to the way it tappers from thick at the bottm to thin towards the tip.
---Does anybody know it the spatual blade is heat reated the same as the main blade? I think it could be turned into a wharncliff or spear point pretty easily, but I'm not sure if it'd be worth doing if the steel is too soft, or over hardend. ANy thought would be greatly appreciated, as I'd hate to do something regretable to this beautiful knife.
Also, would it be sugested that I could just try to trade it for a similar doctor with a edged secondary blade originally? Thanks for any advise on this, and happy Thanks giving. -Joe

Siggy, if you decide to try and trade it straight up, you can post it in the "Slipjoint Swap Meet" at the top of the page. Just list the knife and what knife you want in exchange.
(Otherwise you can list it in the "Trade" section of the forums.)

Siggyhk, Send it back to the dealer if you can. The series # 9 Year 1999 S&M had a doctor knife with a clip and a pen blade, closed length 3 1/4" and ATS-34 blades. Perhaps this would suit you better...

Here's a link to another S&M Pearl Handeled 3 1/4" 1997 Doctor Knife with a Spear Blade and a Pen Blade. I think these are 420HC Blades...

I had the same situation.
I did not know what to do with a spat blade, apart from speading peanut butter!!

I sent mine back and got one with a pen secondary blade.

I am very pleased

Thanks fellas. Unfortunately I'm an idiot and took a fine stone to it to try and touch up the edge, which, due to my lack of sharpening skill, resulted in slight scratching on the blade. So, it's not a mint knife any longer. Also, I got it in a trade on here, so sending it back wouldn't of been an option. Maybe offering it for trade might still work, but damn, I should of known better than to try and sharpen it personally. I usually have a local shop take care of that for me. Ah, we live and learn, hopefully. Anyhow, I appreciate all the advice fellas. And if your lookin for a lighly sharpened 1996 pearl Doc (3 3/4) for similar, let me know. Thanks again.
