I spotted this by chance on Knive Ship Free site. It's the lower cost version of an Indian River Jack.

The knife is Schatt & Morgan #99 Scout. Same pattern as IRJ but different materials.

Can anyone provide feedback on this knife? How is fit & finish?

Thanks

I've heard a few complaints about fit and finish but the main one I've heard about the newer IRJ is the blade pull being a nail breaker. I personally wouldn't pay that much for 420 steel either but that's just me. For the same exact price I'd rather have that S&M Barlow with the 1095 blade steel that is at the bottom of the page you linked to. :) KSF has excellent customer service though so no matter what you choose they will make things right if for some reason you were unhappy with what you got.

Thanks for the input. I like the pattern and size - just not sure about quality/value.

The knife I'm really considering is Northwoods Presidential. I came across the #99 Scout while browsing Knives Ship Free - it peaked my interest because it shares the same pattern as IRJ.

I really like all attributes of the Presidential - just not sure I like the size. I tend to carry 3.5" and 3.75" stockmans and jack knives. I have a couple 4" and 4.25" stockmans - they are heavy/bulky but great for heavy duty work.

Guess I'm just gonna have to get a Presidential and take it for a ride.

The barlow you pointed out is a verra nice.

Good choice on the Presidential. It is a larger knife at 4" (I believe it's 4"...might me 4.25") but was designed to be slim for pocket carry. Blade rub to be expected.

I've been tempted by this knife befor too. But think I'd really be happier with a GEC 15 ebony single blade long pull swedged spear with end cap.

But that's just me.

Yes I like those GEC 15's also. I definitely agree with you - I like the long pull, swedged spear. A similar one I like is #68 white owl. Single blades seem to be a little tough to find.

My take is that it is an excellent knife for the money. That being said, it wouldn't be my first choice.

The Presidential has been a real sleeper in the Northwoods line. It is one of my favorites simply because it packs two blades into such a thin profile.

I would go that way if it were me. The Presidential rides easily in your pocket and is even better in a pocketslip.

Derrick - thanks for the input. I am very interested in the Presidential. I like the larger slip joints, but the ones I have are stockman - they're just too bulky for the pocket everyday.

The pattern and aesthetics are what peaked my interest in the Presidential. The slim profile is what sells it for me.

I am surprised that it is not a more popular model. I may become a disciple once I have one in hand.

Thank you for the input.

I think the reason it wasn't crazy popular was that it is pretty expensive. I about fell over when I figured it.

Here is how I decide a Northwoods knife to produce....

I think about all the cool knives I have always wanted and then I have them made. Sometimes they are hot, sometimes not.

The Presidential is a great knife. Let me know what you think of it.

I will do that. Keep up the creative process!

Railsplitter - thanks for keeping the thread on task. I just came out the other side of the rabbit hole.

You're welcome Rex. :) I had also spotted the Scout knife on the KSF website and I'm also a bit curious what owners think of it.

I think a more affordable version of the Indian River Jack is a great idea if done right but it looks like it might be even less popular that the Presidential.

I wanted to give this thread a bump to fish for feedback on the 99 Scout.

I'm getting pretty tempted, but, like you Rex, am also looking hard at a Presidential.

I should just save my dough for the new 38 I know I won't be able to live without....

Cool cool. I was wondering if this thread would ever come back to life - it was sinking like old fish food.

Choices choices ... what to do. I will get around to getting a Presidential one of these days

Derrick, I think you are spot on here about the popularity of the Presidential, the price scares folks off a bit.

I would love to give one of the ebony Scouts a try, but it seems like every time I get ready to pull the trigger a "better" GEC comes along. Heck, the 38 whittler is only about 10 bucks more than the 99 Scout.

I was about to pick this knife up till I realized that it's stainless. I think a single spear 15 will satisfy me till I get my hands on an IRJ

I'm pretty sure the IRJ is stainless as well, although a fancier type.

Thanks Derrick for the coupon on the 99 Scout this week! I'll hafta see what the dealership says about my busted Blazer, but I'm hoping to pick one up while the picking is good.
