I've allways thought this knife looked interesting. But I never got around to buying it. I Have beckers, BMs fixed, Ranger. Just a bunch of fixed blades that are super tough, But I allways wanted the seal 2000. It's on clearance sale at a store by my house for about $75. Is this knife any good. I know it's aus 6. knives I've had in that steel that where made in Japan have allways been ok. All that stuff in that ad about government testing looks like hype to me. So should I get it to add to my collection, because it's a good deal and a nice tough knife, or is it just a hyped piece of junk?

I have no complaints at all about my SEAL 2000, a great knife !!!!

Cheers,

Carl

I liked Carls Seal 2000... so did another friend. He bought it from Carl. LOL!! But Carl liked it so much he bought another if I'm not mistaken. One of these days I'll have one too. ;)

The general complaint is that kydex is tight, am I right? I found that once you are able to mold how the sheath grips the knife in place, the way you wanted... it aint too bad!

I have a first gen SEAL 2000, and it served me well. My SEAL 2000 has been out of my user rotation for a number of years now, but threads like this make me want to dig it out and use it again. I have two types of factory sheaths; one nylon-over-leather (I think), and two of the early Kydex sheaths with the SOG logo. The knife can be inserted into the Kydex sheath to facilitate left- or right-hand carry. The knife rides tight in the Kydex and draws out nicely.

To me, the SEAL 2000 seem more like a heavy fighter than a general-purpose outdoor blade. I see the fighter aspect in the pointy, narrow blade and in the grind lines on the blade. But I acquired mine for use as an outdoor blade, and it worked fine. It handled batoning on smaller stuff just fine, and will whittle ok, too. Reprofiling the edge, which I have been reluctant to do on this knife, would greatly improve its carving performance.

The only thing I don't like about this knife is are the serrations. If SOG were to make the SEAL 2000 (or original SEAL Pup!) with a plain edge, I'd snatch on up in a heartbeat!

The serration is a huge turn off for me as well. It's the only thing keeping me from buying one. I don't understand what the purpose of having 2 inches of serrations for, beside making it a pain to sharpen.

Serrations aren't a favorite of mine. I have an old SOG Recondo and a pal of mine was clever enough to grind away not only the serrations but the tanto front-end.
Now I have a way-cool "custom non-factory one of a kind" SOG Recondo with a bit of recurve to the blade.

Where's There's A Grinder, There's A Way !!

Cheers,

Carl
