I received my new Spyderco S.P.O.T. last week, I opened the package and found the Spyderco box, but thought there was no knife in it. When I opened the box I found the knife. At first I was a little disappointed by the dimensions of the knife. It seemed small, maybe even too small. I took the knife out and it felt very light (37 grams), then I took out the Kydex sheath that came with it. Grabbing the knife felt natural, all my fingers gripped the knife where it supposed to be. Even inserting my index finger thru the hole was a natural act. When I held the knife clenched in my fist, only the small blade (1 5/8") protruded from my fist. This way the knife is hardly visible and non threatening, especially in low light environments. I swung the knife around a few times and grip on the handle was good, although a little too thin for my big hands. But although rather thin , combined with the finger hole, there was very positive knife retention, and it seems almost impossible to wrench this knife out of your hand. The second thing I discovered that u could still use your fingers and hand, when the knife was dangling onto my index finger by the ring. U could still grab or hold things and use things like a cell phone, a can of pepper spray or the car keys, without the knife falling out of your hand. This is rather important because u can still use the hand although the knife is still in your hand. On top of the knife are serrations so your thumb falls naturally onto the serrations for blade retention. Then I inserted the blade into it’s sheath. With a noticeable click u could feel the knife engaging the sheath. Retention was very positive, u had too jerk the knife out of the sheath. If u grab the sheathed knife with your hand your thumb rests on the edge or the sheath, u can push the knife out very slowly and very silent. If u have to draw it fast u could jerk it out. IMHO t will never fall out when seated properly. U can even check if the knife is seated perfect by looking thru a hole in the sheath. If u see the tip off the knife it is seated perfectly. The whole package weighs next to nothing. The knife is the FB08P, so the plain AUS6 knife without the micarta scales. Although I rather had one in VG10, my financial status, decided to give it a try. Because of the AUS6, it will work very good as a defensive knife, but it will hold it edge less longer then VG10. After wearing the knife for a few days I decided to make some changes. I replaced the ball-chain with a piece of paracord, and gave the handle a cordwrap. Now it handled like a dream. The cord wrap made it more suitable to grip the weapon for my taste. Now this is partly because of the size of my hands. The butt end of the S.P.O.T. can be used as a pommel to hit with. Because of my large hands it hitting capability is diminished, but someone with smaller hands can easily use it as an attitude adjuster. Even with the cord wrap the knife is almost not visible under only a t-shirt, and without the cord wrap it was invisible. So invisible that my wife never noticed that I carried the knife on a trip until I took it off to go to sleep.  Now a few weeks later I still wear the knife constantly, as my defensive knife, but I have used it to cut string, plastic, cardboard etc. It handled the cutting as a dream. It has a very sharp blade wich makes it perfect as a slashing weapon. It will leave deep cuts, although the blade seems small. Although not designed as a stabbing weapon it has a very sharp beak, and I cut myself with the beak of the blade while cutting a string. Although only carried by it’s own momentum it dug about 4 mm into my thumb. Ouch, it bled profusely, I had to wrap my thumb with duct tape to stop the bleeding. So after all I am very please with my new S.P.O.T. and it disappears when wearing it until u need it. It looks to me as a very good defensive knife for people not trained in knife fighting. It is light, very easy to use and wear, unbreakable, and even low profile. U could draw the knife walking into the underground garage and get in your car with the knife in your hand without someone noticing it. And if someone tried to rob or rape u he would be very surprised by the cutting power of the little “slasher” This is not a knife to scare people although the reversed S blade has a sinister look too it.
A good buy

I tried to post pictures of the knife but apparently i'm not able to post any pictures

I have posted the same revieuw on the Spyderco forum, with pictures.

hmmm, hey how old are u anyway? English is not my native tongue so it is possible that i made some rather strange sentences but no pun intended :D If i wrote it in Dutch you couldn't understand it right?

Tom

Well you can write in English better than some American kids write in English. I should know ;)

That is an interesting review. No one has said much about how the SPOT actually "handles". To me it looks too long and too small at the same time, but I'm glad to hear a different perspective.

I have trouble getting a handle on it. When I grip it in my fist, it's totally _secure_, but it doesn't want to orient in-line with my hand. It always tries to rotate counter-clockwise (I'm right-handed) toward a "paintbrush grip". I'm sure a martial artist could design a system that took advantage of that, but I have _zero_ martial arts training. It could be the thinness of the handle--maybe the micarta-scaled model would work better for me.

I had the same problem, but u should try a cord wrap i found on the Spyderco website, spydercoforum section. It makes the little knife better to grip, stops the knife from twisting, and u can add a little personal touch thru it. This was a huge improvement for me, and given the price of a piece of cord, it's cheap and fun to do. I always use climbing rope to wrap. These rope's are very tough, available is fun colours and u can remove them from the knife should u need it in a emergency. On the forum is a little photo tutorial how to wrap the S.P.O.T.
Greetz :)

I'm working on a paracord wrap (thanks for the inspiration!)

I'm trying to find a way to adapt some ornamental ring-wraps to make a SPOT wrap that's comfortable and attractive. It's not as easy as I'd expected :)

As this is BladeForums maybe u could make a new thread about cordwraps, i'm shure a lot of people inhere know a lot about different cordwraps! ;)
