SwampRat Rattwieler vs Tops steel eagle? best steel? I like the design of the Tops more, but Swamp rat seems to have the best rep under $300.

What knife would you prefer in this class?

Swamp Rat Ratweiler: differentially tempered 52100 is incredibly tough and sharp stuff.

Aren´t just the large blade (Camp Tramp and that) differentially ht?

The smaller knifes (hr, bc) are surely not. Read their site.

Their 52100 added with fancy is great. SRKW!

Indeed, SRKW. Even their smaller blades are tough and take a nasty edge. I've already had to hold myself up with an HR cause a freezer was falling down the stairs at me. nearly rippe the door frame out with it.

Yet another vote for SRKW. TOPS offers some nice designs...but IMO they're overpriced for what they offer - and their steel is of average quality (at best).

Swamp Rat's proprietary steel is tough as nails and will hold an edge for a long time. And it responds nicely to stropping: I never had to sharpen my Camp Tramp, a little stropping compound on an old leather belt restored the original edge with minimal effort.

Sold mine because I more of a tactical knife guy myself, but if they just offered a pure-bred fighter I'd get one in a heartbeat.

I like many of the Tops designs, way cool....BUT... their performance is not on par with the price. If I had lots of expendable income it would be a diffenrent matter. Rats win my vote in: price, performance, customer service and usability!
