I believe this to be a S-W 140 but I'm not for sure. There is no number on it. What I'm going by is out of the "Notes from the mid fifties" I read in this forum.

To feel for comfortable about it, I would appreciate the opinions from the more experienced Schrade-Walden collectors here.

Is this a Schrade-Walden 140?

Jackie, i don't know, but you sure have some fine older Schrades in fantastic condition. is ebay your source ? roland

Roland,

Thank you.

Ebay is one of them. There's a number of places I visit and Google. I'm disabled and unable to drive. Thus, the internet and friends are my sources.

Yes, a 140BH (Bear Head). The figural pommel is quite odd, reminding me of an old drive-in dairy bar critter, Polar Bear Frozen Custard shops of the 1930's-1940's.

A lot of sellers call the polar bear a dog. The #140, as a whimsical decoration, used a bear's head shape pommel (seen in 1953,’54), a play on the owner's names, Baer.

It had an overall length of 8 1/4", and a stainless hollow ground blade of 4 inches. It had a grooved "Stratawood" handle, aluminum alloy guard, and black and white spacers. The pattern without the bear's head is listed in 1955-‘57. It is not listed in 1959.According to A.B. Hourin's notes:

#140
4 ½" Fixed Blade Hunter with Bear’s Head

I have this exact knife but mine has a WONDA-EDGE over patent pending etched on blade on the stamped Schrade Walden side. Other side tang stamped stainless with no. 140 etched on blade. The WONDA-EDGE is a serrated edge.Looking at Jackies knife the difference in blade heigth looks as if serrations may have been ground off, or was there a non serrated and a serrated version? Schrades always keep you guessing. Sorry i can't do the picture thing yet,am working on it,happy collecting,G.M.
