i have a Schrade Walden 896K with unusual scales. they are completely smooth, like celluloid, and have a pattern of lines to look like bone. with a 9x loupe i see what look like the cut ends of Haversian canals, the little tubes which enclose a single small blood vessel in bone. however overall, it does not "seem" like bone.
last pic is with a S.W. (i think, don't have knife here) 234K with Meershaum handles, which are textured, not smooth.
did Schrade try different versions of Meershaum ?
also, the 896K blades have "stains" which do not remove with Simichrome.
dried lacquer ? any ideas on what this is ? roland

Roland,
I can't answer your question, but do like the knife. The stains on the blades almost give it a bit of a damascus steel look. Rather certain that's not intentional, but I still like it.

Roland:

I have a knife with handles like your 234, although it is an 832 with three blades.

I've always thought the 832 is Delrin. It feels like it when I skate a sharp knife parallel to the surface (it catches). On a bone handle, which is harder, it glides. The 896K you have is unlike most other KHorns I've seen. I like the coloring better on the 896K than the 832. It looks more natural.

The handles are delrin, the stains are probably there forever,i've never found a way to get the stains out of carbon steel, just clean it best you can, happy collecting,G.M P.s if you tap the handle on your teeth you can usually tell the diff. bone sounds glassy, and delrin has a duller sound, not very scientific but its worked for me for 15 years, and i haven't broke any teeth yet.

Thanks "Mr. Menace", so it's Delrin, as is "Meershaum Bone". was this an early attempt to mimic bone, before the usual Meershaum Bone (as in my 234K) was settled on ?
anyone else have a S.W. with this style of Delrin ? G.M., i presume you do. perhaps you could show pics. ? roland

Hi Roland, yes i have a few,im much better with knives than camera's i'll try and get a buddy to take photos,

G.M. taking and sharing knife pics is a whole lotta fun, and quite satisfying.
until recently i was computer and digital camera phobic and hopeless.
but i finally learned so i could show some of my knives here.
i encourage you to get a digital camera and start taking pics of your "babies".
you'll be glad you did, and the rest of us too! roland

Yea, i gotta do that, but if i buy a camera thats money i can't spend on a knife. Oh how i hate big decisions. I do have pics of alot of my knives over on [open for viewing] bottom of page 6 ,if you have'nt seen em check em out.I kinda like the Mr. Menace thing, has a nice ring ha ha .

usually i do not have access to hi-speed, so i can't view "The Collections".
but tonight i do, so i just viewed your collection Mr. M. Very Impressive sir !
but page 6 is LB7s, i didn't see any knives with handles like my 896K. roland
